I bet most you European types don't drive 100 miles a day very often, either.

Different countries, different systems.   $5/gallon in the US would totally destroy the economy.

Wrong J_A_B, I know quite a few poeple who commute, either in UK (Oxford - London, that's 2x 60+ miles = 120+ miles a day) or in France (Reims - Paris , errr, long way too ;))

Gonna get myself a solar powered motorcicle one day, I swear...

Not wrong at all.  You might know a lot of people who commute such distances, but that doesn't change the fact that Europeans on the whole don't need to drive as much as Americans do.

Nor does it change the fact that European gas prices would destroy the American economy.

Yes a person living in the French countryside will drive more than a person from NYC.  That's not the point; anyone can find examples.  What I'm getting at, is comparing European gas prices to US gas prices is an excercise in futility because the countries in question are so much different.

Back in the 1970's, when I was deployed to Europe, we would bounce from airport to airport supporting the U.S. 6th Fleet. Rather than pay the outrageous gasoline prices, we simply carried around three 5 gallon Jerry cans, which we filled every time we refueled our aircraft. So, we always had an ample supply of 100-130 avgas for our rental cars. Since we often staged out of civilian airports, our fuel bill went right on the DOD credit card. ;) I believe that at that time, avgas was less expensive than pump gasoline. Therefore, our Disbursement Officer though that it was sound cost saving. We never asked the rental car companies what they thought about us running their Fiats, Renaults and Alfa Romeos on high octane aviation fuel. However, they did run very well, especially after we advanced the ignition timing a bit.

Back in the States, it was common for 115-145 avgas to find its way into our personal vehicles, such as my TVR 2500M and motorcycles. Usually we grabbed a few gallons of "contaminated" fuel from the de-fueling bowser before it was delivered for recycling.

Commute to work 42 miles each way = 84 miles per day - 4 days a week min = 336 per week * 50 weeks = 16800miles per year just on work  add other stuff doing about 25000 a year

Spending at least £50 per week on petrol @ $1.42 to pound = $71.00 per week to run small 4 door and earn same as I did in the states

Your economy wouldn't die JAB - just like ours didn't in the 70's - it just takes some getting used to.

Is there an award for the best thread hijack?  Never in the field of human whining has a thread been so thoroughly hijacked by so few. . .or something like that.

And all you guys who said European gas prices would destroy the US economy, I'm still laughing about that one. . .oh, you were serious?

This is one of the best hijackings I ever read. Went from questioning the sanity of the players to euro gas prices.

Good grief people!

Good post moose.

He said Lighten Up HBlair!!!

I believe moose's post isn't really about people's sanity and is actually a very subtle covert whine about gas prices.

Geez Moose...quit your whining!!
