Little tool for Squad Websites designers

For those of you holding a website who are tired of other poeple stealing your pics & contents:
(You'll need only basic HTML understanding to apply the following), this will prevent (non-advanced) users to steal your hard work easily.
Here's a little javascript that you can easily add in your pages (Also note the "imagetoolbar" metatag to add if you want to disable Internet Explorer 6.*'s image toolbar)
Do not forget to remove the comment tags (what comes to the right of the "//")

// Disables IE6 Picture toolbar


//Don't forget to activate it

//Your page Contents

Just stumbled upon this at work today, thought it might be usefull for those with their 109 pics databases

DISCLAIMER: It will still be possible for someone to steal your contents, but it'll make it a little less easier. (also, don't forget to disable the browser toolbar, or all he'll have to do is to look click on "View source")

on this page for example :

add that to the url with a / before it.

pull up that image by pasting url into address

and right click and save like normal.

My webstats lead me to this forum.  So I joined because I was unable to e-mail you.

I'd like to know why you disrespected me so much as to post the instructions on how to steal my images.

If you go to my site you will know that unlike most sites that are a closet gathering of stolen images off other sites, well...

my site is 98% all original artwork.

I also spend a lot of money on graphics programs, animation programs, and refernce books on the holidays and "History of.." topics.

I make no money.  I ask for no personal info so I can sell people's email addresses. I have no pop-ups to bug you. No affiliate buttons and when you find my page on a search engine for something, the stuff is there.

(I hate sites where I go there and I'm thinking, "So where is the information this search engine said this site has???"

Anyway, If you're smart enough to steal from me, you should be able to know that as a webmaster I'm smart enough to find your instructions to others also.

PS: I realize disabling the "NO RIGH CLICK" disables browsers from opening new windows.  I've just copy-pasted a new message when people right click.  I need to FTP all 430 pages over.  But, I'm trying to offer some education and humor and yet I feel I have a right to protect my originality from thieves.

I was politely  dropping a hint and asking you to delete your original post giving instructions on how to steal out of respect for me.  I guess you didn't catch on?

As you said to another poster, "ignorance is the best security."
I'd prefer people to be ignorant about stealing and wise about protection.

Only my watercolor backgrounds are free for the taking. All the other stuff is not.

But I respect your right of free speech even though it will cause me more problems.

Whether you prefer people to be ignorant or not, won't prevent theft any more than my posting information, that any beginning HTML programming can figure out, will cause theft.

 But I'll tell you what, at about the same level as the code you have on your web page I will remove my post from this board.

Just close your eyes and it will be gone.

I think we're having one of those male-female =  Mars-Venus discussions because I don't think you're understanding me?  

I stated on the Stop Copying page that I know this code doesn't prevent stealing.  I tell people that.

But my lawyer said to keep it on for legal reasons.  Why?

Because having nothing there is like saying, "OK take it."

This code as you pointed out has about as much power to stop stealing as a "Do not tresspass sign" posted on private property.

The sign can't physically stop someone from stepping on private land.  My code can't physically stop someone from stealing.

But just like the "Do Not Tresspass"sign, at least the person knew that the owner of the property did not want them there. If they violate their request than they are the ones at fault.  It's like those kids who plagiarised in Kansas.  The mom claims "The kids did not know what plagiarism was."  Well, no one can come to my site and say, "Gee I didn't know Brownielocks did not want me to take her cartoons, graphics, animations, etc."


So it's not a prevention.  It's just a warning sign.  I don't claim that it will stop stealing.  I never have.  I just feel that one should not publically give stealing instructions.  I know many do it privately via e-mail of course. I also have no right how to tell someone how to participate on a forum.  I was simply ASKING!
And you answered and so that's that.


BTW, Google also provides an Image Search feature so that's how most people take my stuff.  I don't like it, but I've gotta live with it.

I think we finally finally finally hit a balance and landed on planet earth?

 That's a great link. It explains in a nutshell the heck I'm dealing with.  Notice is says  "time consuming" but useless a lot?   I know one webmaster who is using the mouse-over to protect her real images.  As they say, "Time consuming."  Thus I don't even attempt it.

I also digitally watermark all my images.  I know, I know...the thieves can't see it.  But a visual watermark messes up the art as they say too.

What they do not say is that watermarking costs money!

The No Right Click at least it doesn't cost anything  (for being worthless).

I also put some of my files in the robot.txt area hoping to stop the sneaks.

I'm trying.

The programmer who finds a way to stop stealing on the net I feel will be the next Bill Gates!

In the meantime, such is life for us artists on-line. (sigh)
