So... When our western citizens or troops are, say, in Saudi Arabia they should follow local traditions of not drinking alcohol and women wearing veils?

Odd, I think this is not happenging at the moment but of course it is ok because Saudi's are savages?

Actually, I think you'll find the US troops do conform to these guidelines.

In fact, there is a case in the courts right now where a female pilot is suing because she was ordered to wear the veil by her superior officers.

During the Gulf War, I talked with members of my old squadron who told me they were only allowed non-alcoholic beverages. This in a squadron that rotates aircraft and crews continually and has "secret" bags that cannot be opened by any non-US authority. Still, they told me the rules were very strict, stated punishment extremely harsh, so they complied.

I can tell you as a female soldier who was stationed in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm, we most definitely HAD to conform to the local traditions. Including but not limited to having a MALE escort with me whenever I traveled into town.

That's there house right Jochen? but I will say this, that if I had a "friend" at my house protecting me from my hostile neighbor who pointed guns at me, I'd bend the rules a bit for him to make him comfortable

BTW, I went to a USAF tech school in the '70s with Iranians and Saudis. Their appetite for partying put the American GIs to shame.

I know what you mean, Apathy. I'm 6'1, weigh 200 pounds, have a beard, pink hair with yellow highlights, wear swim fins, a tutu and a sports bra and I get profiled all the time too. I complained to the police one time and they suggested I try to look more "normal," whatever that is, so maybe people of Middle European ancestry should make an effort to look less uh... 2 of my oldest bestest friends in this whole world are from Iran. They came over in '79 right in the middle of the hostage crisis. Them 2 dudes went through all kinds of hell during that time. I got to learn their history and culture first hand and they are wonderful people. They are not arabs and HATE being associated with arabs, that goes for most Iranians I met. They speak a diferent language and have a diferent culture and believe it or not they are somewhat "westernised" in Iran. It's just their government that is whacked.

I had always hoped that one day the climate would change so that I may go there to check out the country. I doubt that will happen in my life time now

About 8 years ago they went back for a month to visit. My friend Dariush almost didn't make it back. When they were at the airport in Tehran he almost got conscripted into the army. Luckily for him his family are rich pestatio farmers there and have lots of connections with the government (ie. they knew who to bribe) so he made it back home

They brought me back a piece of Persopolis. A little chunck of a column that was carved and etched by some Persian over 2500 years ago. Persopolis was the "castle" built by Darius I in 528 BC it was later burned by Alex the great when the great wimp Darius III fled in fear of his life (later lost his head) Ironicly Darius the II actually helped the Jews out, I believe it's in the bible too. Think he gave them back Isreal or something, I really can't remember the story.

It's a real sad deal for me to know they are part of the "Axis of Evil" but with the current theocracy thingy they have over there it's necessary. They are ruled by evil people

Though ALL the Iranians I ever met would give me the shirt off their backs if I needed it, and they did this from time to time when I had troubles in life. They are a good people with a great history and culture. I hope we never go to war with them.....

We could talk Udie, I work closely with an Iranian engineer (who I might add, is one of the brightest, most intelligent humans I've ever been associated with) that came over in 1980, and had a hell of a time getting over too. After he arrived here, he went to the U. of Oregon and graduated from there.

About 15 years ago (before I met the lovely 2nd Mrs. Tahgut) I took an Industrial Engineering class. This was a 1 week course from a private firm. It turns out I was the only person to show up. The instructor (Laila) and I proceded to meet on a daily basis and became quite friendly. She was Iranian and was one of those dark beauties with huge black eyes the disposition of an angel and an exremely agile mind. I completed the course 2 days early, but I stayed for the entire week anyway.
