C-47 suggestion
« on: November 04, 2001, 10:08:00 PM »
I think this has been posted before, but here goes:

I recommend adding an observer position to the C-47 (the "dome" on top of the plane).  This would allow the pilot to see his surroundings better.

Why?

Every C-47 I've attacked never made the slightest effort to avoid me.  Today, flying one, I saw why--they have terrible visibility.  If the C-47 had an abserver position, the goonie driver could better monitor his situation, call for help if he spotted a low NME fighter, and maybe even make an effort to dodge the enemy (In AW the goons would usually try to dodge attacking fighters to the best of their ability, and would occasionally survive long enough for friendly fighters to pick off the attacker).

Such a position would be used pretty much anytime someone flew a goonie, so it wouldn't be wasted effort.   It'd be a small but nice addition to the game.

Hit f3 and then f8 for a "pan view" outside the plane JAB....you can pan around and look at all the preeetty sheep as you fly over them.   ;)

"actually, the c47 has the outside view that all bombers do."

Don't doubt that for a bit. You can hop to gunner positions, correct?

Well yeah, I guess I completely forgot about the outside view.....which IMO should be eliminated   :)    Wouldn't it be more realistic to have the observer viewpoint, than a disembodied 3rd-person viewpoint?

But still, you're right...as long as the outside views are enabled, there's really no need for a goonie observer position.

Which begs the question:  Why haven't any of the C-47's I've encountered ever tried to dodge me?

USSR and Japan both operated license-built C-47's with defensive armament.  How about one (or both) of those?  Would be dandy for scenarios too.

Not a bad suggestion at all. But, then again, neither is the observer position.

Why prolong the inevitable?

I've actually successfully shaken the first pass of a fast BnZ'r a few times, but there isn't a whole lot it can do.

Lol this reminds me when 1.08 first came out.  I was in a goon and i was on my way to get a depot and a Hot shot 262 came along and kept BnZing me everytime he boomed i pulled the C-47 straight verticle until it stalled out, i did this for a good 5 minutes until a friendly P-51 dived in from above and made short work of him  :D

goner,

The Russian Li-2 and Japanese L2D versions of the C-47 had defensive guns.

I did get an intentional kill of a P-38L while flying a C-47.  Used a hillside as my weapon.

He was a bit above me and comming down.  I figured that he might steepen his dive if I dove.  I saw that there was a convient hill and that he would not be able to pull up if he did so.  I did, he did and I got the kill.

It was foolish of him to do so.  I had already dropped my troops and he'd shot one ending my solo base capture attempt.  I was no longer any sort of threat to the base.

What was I gonna do?  Out run him?

I figured he'd be greedy with a helpless C-47 in his sights though.

Another time I had a 3-4 minute turning duel with an Fw190A-5 while flying a C-47.  Unfortunately the calvary arrived too late.  He got me.

In both cases I saw the enemy from the cockpit view.  I don't use F3 views online.
