Salvador Allende, president of Chile.

Democratically elected, became target of US covert operations including sabotage, kidnapping and asassination.

Finally, in September 11th 1973, Augusto Pinochet rose up in a coup funded by the US in arms and training. Allende's last words announced to the public was:

"I address to all who now will face oppression, that I will not give up.  For the people I will give my life, but I will always be with you. I believe in the fate of our country, and the fate of our people. I also believe the people will one day triumph, and the roads will be open once more, people shall walk free, and will make a better future.

For Chile! For the people! For the workers! These are my final words. I believe you will over come my sacrifice, and soon, the all the people who love freedom will open up a better society. They may think they can rule us with brute force, but we know violence and criminal act can never ultimately stop our paths. History is on our side, it is the will of the people. Someday we shall walk free, and open up a better future with our own hands."

September 11th, 10:40 PM, Allende refuses to surrender, orders the presidential body guards to leave the post and escape. He faces the rebels alone armed with only a rifle.

 ...

Now that's what I call a real 'president - the elected leader of the people'.

Define "modern times."

Most people count modern times as happening since they where born so when I was in school the 40-50 year old teachers spoke of modern times as starting around the 20's to the 40’s.

For me anything before the mid 60's falls in the category of history

Because he made all the right decisions when it mattered the most, during the industrial age. America is what it is today because of the growth it had during the industrial age.  Also he wasnt an isolationist type of a president back then while many others were.

JFK?

“Things I disliked about Kennedy:
Hookers at the 1960 Democratic Convention”

whoopee, I hated this man until I knew that. That’s some serious balls. He WOULD have pulled the trigger.

Ronnie? Knock down his towers, you’d see an actor alright. As in acting on dusting off the missile tubes. He was the toejam.

For the rest of ya, yup, there is 2 ‘World’ things you can count on the USA doing. Losing gay soccer matches, and winning the world wars.

Carry on.
