My co-workers Uncle test drives cars for magazine as a living (he's actually retired, so he does it for fun, but they pay him!)  Here's his review of the Mini, just received this from Marc (co-worker) yesterday:

Quote
Just drove this:

If youıre old enough to remember the Mini, then you know what this little
rascal is about. If the Mini Cooper is new to you, it might look like a
strange runt. First assumption might be be that it looks like fun but maybe
not on the freeway. Surprise! For such a short car, it will cruise smooth
and fairly quiet, belying the short wheelbase and 1.6 liter 115 hp engine.
But in the tight twisties and in heavy city traffic, the Mini Cooper is a
fine $17,000 weapon. This little bomb will put a smile on your face as it
squirts thru tiny traffic holes while you toss and twitch it on tight
mountain turns. It doesnıt really have a lot of torque so you must rev and
shift like an expert go-karter to make it shine. You do pay a modest penalty
on rough and choppy pavement since thereıs not much wheel travel available.
Pushed very hard, there seems to be a very high cornering limit with every
sign that you can trust it right to the limit. The styling and size are so
unique, it will never get confused with any other car on the road. Exterior
chrome details are almost gem like. The interior could be described as
³funky fun moderne² Everything feels very substantial. The clutch action is
gentle.....the gear shift a solid fat shiny ball. Interestingly, the Mini
never feels ³mini² from the drivers seat. A Mini cult could develop in
future years if the after market guys develop the kind of power and handling
stuff along with some fun cosmetic items. But already, this little guy looks
very ready to play in stock condition. The Mini Cooper ³S² version has more
power and a stiffer ride. Most folks might like the regular suspension with
lots more power in the future.

Bug,

I could understand your distaste for front-wheel drive cars if you weren't such a Volkswagen Bug enthusiast.  There are very few cars with as little torque and as much oversteer as a bug.  Of course, they switch from over to under while breaking just to add a little variety to the mix.

Front wheel drive vs rear engine... hhmmm.  It even took Porcshe some 70 years to finally figure things out with the Carerra before they got a truly well handling rear engine car.

Now.. if you were comparing to something mid engine/rwd or front engine/rwd you might have a leg to stand on.  But you aren't.

Bugs vs front wheel drive... bwahahahaha.

They race other beatles.

And I've owned beetles bug... they don't corner better than a mini.  Not even close.  Not under any condition.

When i'm in my beetle hell it's feels like a cart :D

only rain sucks (but that is with most RWD)

And yes they race only other beetles
with same engines etc
it makes beetle racing cheap&fun

there a lot of differences between beetles
cant compare model 38 to a 1303 gt bug
lower and stiffer the suspension and add wider tires
makes a big difference

I never saw i mini trying to outcorner me
Rear wheel drive basicly makes shorter corners
add weight in the back it's like having a hammer in the han
try swing it with the hammerhead in the hand than swing it with the steel.

It's needs a bit steermanship offcourse

In other words a FWD car is easier to learn
PUNT
(not for rookies)
