Jerky Graphics
« on: June 25, 2002, 01:39:43 AM »
Hey all,

I had some interesting graphics problems this evening while flying under cloud cover.  My framerate was between 60-85 but I was getting jerky screen movement.  As in when I would roll or pitch the plane the screen would not be smooth as one would expect with framerates in the 50's and above.  The motion was almost like hesitations or spikes in the stick.  However I checked with the joystick settings while rolling the plane and saw no spikes.  I also did not have this problem in clear skies and similar terrain.  I was curious if anyone might have some idea as to what would cause this other than fr's.  The motion would be smooth when not under cloud cover.  By the way I am speaking of overcast/storm type cloud cover.  My framerates are held to 85 max by setting the Hz on my monitor to that so I was close to what I get while flying under blue skies.  I run the game in 32 bit color and 1024 x 768 res. which matches my desktop settings.

Comp. specs.

Dell P1.8g
256 MB DDR Ram
Nvidia Gforce3 ti200
40mg hard drive

Saitek X45 usb.

Thanks in advance,
Zaphod

Whoops, I forgot that part.  I have a soundblaster live value on the dell.  I have also noticed now that I get jerky graphics when hitting the push to talk key (range or channel).  So.......I suspect that the soundcard could be part of this.  I can't recall seeing this problem when hearing others, just when I push the key.  The jerkiness is only when I initially push the key, while holding the key down there is no stuttering.

I stopped using Zone Alarm and now use My Tiny Firewall or whatever it is.  I still get the problem even if I turn off the firewall.

Thanks, Zap

You might try "DXDIAG" at your command prompt.

Turn your sound acceleration down and it should help significantly.  I "had" a SBLive XGamer... Still got it, just won't use it.  It has great sound but is extremely resource intensive.  This won't fix your problem 100%, but it will make your game playable again.

Hope so anyway,

Cyas Up!
