Need help identifying disco or crash.
« on: June 25, 2002, 01:47:18 PM »
Am I discoing or just crashing to desktop because of program failure? I am trying to isolate the problem if there is one with my system.

I posted this in the connectivity area as well.

Until this new version 1.09 and the current connection situation, I hardly ever discoed (I think I'm discoing). I don't get any kind of connection lost message. It just sort of freezes or "hick-ups" for a moment, and then I see the little windoze hour glass and then poof it's back to desktop.

This has been happening since the network change and the new version. I have not changed anything else that I know of on the system. I have it optimized for AH.

I have certainly noticed a correlation with the spikes on the Network view in AH, bottom portion. Ping plotter also ocassionally shows a major spike at border3 and theplanet, sometimes up to 500 to 700. I've attached an image at this moment. The problem is it does not seem to be consistent, but it is really annoying.

I believe I am discoing, but just wanted to isolate the problem. The performance otherwise is just fine.

Specs:

AMD XP 1700
ASUS Mboard M266 w/appropriate 4 in 1s
No overclocking
256 megs
Creative Anilihator Pro II (Geoforce II GTS) no overclocking
Nvidia drivers 12.90 (seem to have always worked fine before so have not changed, get 40 to 75 fps)
SB Live (Vox seems to work OK)
DX8.1
Windows 98 SE (all the necessary updates)
No conflicts or IQ sharing
AT&T Cable Connection that seems to work OK
I have the McAfee firewall and Vprotection but I disable during play as well as most everything.

Update1. Last night I played and was discoed almost every sortie for awhile. Later on I went to an empty VOX channel and stayed there for the rest of the evening. I did not disco anymore. I was watching the connection but the spiking had gone down some as well. Still I have no definitive cause and effect.  Earlier it was spike city at border3 and theplanet for me on both AH connectivity view and Ping Plotter.

Thanks for any help!

FYI It's a crash to desktop issue. Does not seem to be a connection problem now. I was getting CTDs often with 1.09 and all the time with 1.10.

I basically cleaned and reinstalled everything related to drivers and AH. Now the frequency of CTDs is less but I'm not sure if it's related to what I did or not.
