what would a wwii simulation be without helcopters? well very unhistorical! helicopters played the rescue/evac roll since the early 1940's. some early helis actualy played the roll as bombers! but what role would they play in AH? should they play a role in AH?

i do not believe that there is a single sim that boasts the claim that you can fly one of the original helicopters! if there was a sim that did would you want to check it out?

here are a few questions.

1) Could the AH engine sucessfuly model a helicopter's FM with all the skill required to fly one of these birds?

2) Would anyone want to fly in one of these birds?

3) How would a early helocopter be incorporated into the AH strat system. (ie ju52/c47 question)

i think that it would take alot of work but it would greatly improve AH! what does everyone else think?

there is a large helicopter base of players just sitting waiting on the next helicopter sim! what will that sim be and how well will the helicopters of that sim be modeled?

I think it's a great idea. One that would take some work, but would be worth it.  Helies would expand that always-sought-after variety HT is striving for.  As for early Helies defending from B&Zing Spits? I don't know how it would work. Unlike tanks, which are also slow and easy to hit, they don't have that armour.  But it would still be sweet to do a bombing run in.  I'd definately fly it, maybe simply for the sake of having something completely different. (Not that HT doesn't already provide insane variety. I just think that the Effort/Reward ratio is really high for this particualr idea)

Maybe we might see some AI helo's dropping supplies like convoy trucks - or they can be radio'd to pick up downed pilots (if they want to wait for one)

Just imagine AI helo's and C47's flying the supply routes between bases -

BTW why are those trucks are harder to kill than the trains?

We need the PBY floatplane for Air Sea Rescue as well

i think if they expanded on the ground aspect a bit, ie a few more gvs and a bail system that lets you run around with better animation and with either a pistol or some form of rifle and rewards for rescue ops, like flying a helo to rescue a downed pilot in enemy territory etc... AH would definantly become the leading wwii mmog!

imagine flying a rescue helo over a line of tanks advanceing on your down'd b17 gunfire is exchanged between the small arms fire of the helo and the tanks! the helo lands behind a hill and two pilots walk over to the helo and exit, they are listed as rtb for that sortie! then the helo makes a break for it as some spits come down on it... Tail rotor hit, repeat tail rotor hit going down!

Well, historical aside, if I want to fly a friggen heli, I'll punch up the old longbow than I still run on my old puter. Sure, helicopters were there very limitedly in WW2,  but didn't play THAT big of an effort until Korea, and then it was still limited. Do you guys really feel like flying something that did VERY little? Personally, I'm waiting until a good Vietnam era sim comes out, with all the possibilities. Until then, well...

  Absolutely.  I would love the chance to fly a helicopter in AH. If  HTC  had to invent a use for it I wouldnt care, it would  be a nice distraction, and definatly wouldnt effect arena ballance or  anyone elses fun.

 A helo modeled by Hitech, if for no other reason I would be curious to see what he would come up with.

would be a great vehicle to your your vperk on! maybe set it up as a small supply ship! would be a blast to fly!

but im willing to bet it will never happen, seems most wwii sims just leave out this critical moment in helo history! would a ww1 sim be allowed to leave out planes? definantly not so why should a wwii sim be allowed to leave out helos?

none of these sims have any ambition to build a helo aspect into their games b/c of the combat role of the vehicle, but yet they will build vehicles/planes that saw a even more limited use?

guess we as a community will have to accept that and wait for a sim to model early-vietnam helos!

I'd love to fly one in AH. As far as the historical relevance... well, I never heard much about the LA-7 either, until AH.  

Options are always a good thing.  

It would be a great way to resupply vehicles and PT boats.

Just this week my father-in-law told me that he applied for helicopter rescue duty during the war.  He was a stateside gunnery pilot/instructor and flew P-39s, P-63s, AT-6s, AT-11s, B-25s, B-17s and even got checked out on the SBD.  His commander talked him out of it.

I don't know of any armed 'choppers flown by any side during ww2, do you guys?

Seems to be that in a fighter-rich air combat sim they'd be as difficult to shoot down as say a Tiger Moth.

no they only flew as rescue craft... but who is to say they didnt carry a rifle in there with them?

although some did carry a few small bombs... think there was 2-3 instances where helos were used as bombers before the war ended
