Here's my rule:

If it has a red icon, and if it's within my means, it dies. No exceptions. I've had similar situations, one recently with a Mustang. I simply spiralled down in my Yak, and the instant he recovered; whamo. I don't expect less from the opposition. I recently managed to spin an La-5 while fighting with a Spitfire. He tried to kill me while I wrestled with the La. He missed and it cost him a little later. However, I had no problem with his trying. But, as Westy pointed out, hitting a spinning fighter isn't easy. Best to position one's self to nail him on recovery (that is if he does recover), assuming he has no friends around to spoil your chance.

I've had enough experience with uncharitable pilots to realize that it is far wiser to shoot first.

I've seen some pilots (cough... Fester... cough) kick into intentional spins if they lose the advantage and have some altitude below them.  This makes them a tougher target to hit as they're spiralling earthward, and most players will let them go with the belief that they're just going to auger in.

In my book, if it's still flying/floating, it's gonna die.  Period.

Last week a squadmate and myself upped 262s in order to hunt down another 262 picking off unsuspecting prey in a furball.  We caught up to him and tangled for a few seconds.  My squadmate overshot and the 262 followed him with me closing fast.  They went up into the vert, he broke off as my squaddie dove away, and we both stalled (in the film, it actually looks like we did a very ugly cobra!).  I came out with JUST enough speed to maneuver on top of him as we fell.  I put a toejamload of 30mm into him with great pleasure as he tried to recover :D.  Turns out it was Fester, I was pleased :).

Ah, whenever I see a damaged plane trying to RTB I close in and torture him by throwing 1 or 2 bullets at him .. let him hear the pings ..

and laugh when he panic augers. Saves tax dollars! *grin*

So, what you guys are saying is I should have slowed down, killed the 262, and then left our field open to the buffs? I know, I didn't say that originally. It's been irritating me since it happened. I should have killed him, but I hate letting buffs past me. I was torn between the two options at the time.

Well, that's a different situation entirely.  Buff-busting should be a fighter pilot's priority (otherwise, there may not be a base to return to) so you were smart to let the 262 flutter around on its own.
