Q: New bombing system
« on: June 27, 2002, 03:55:17 AM »
Help file tells:

"After exiting calibration mode, the calibration status will be displayed in green, indicating that the bombsight is calibrated and ready to drop bombs.  Remember that any changes to the flight profile (speed, altitude, etc.) between the calibration and drop will throw off the accuracy of the drop and the bombsight will need to be recalibrated."

Lets assume:

Four players with buff formation (12 buffs).  These guys know their formation flying stuff very well. Three wings (nine buffs) follow lead plane in very tight and steady formation during bomb run to the drop point...

Is it enough if lead plane ONLY calibrate bomb sight system?
How accurate it is if wings drop their bomb just same time with lead plane? Trigger with visually or vai ahvoice.

Just wonder

The Calibration time is that time needed, to feed height over ground, speed, wind, drift etc into your norden or Lofte Bombsight manually, as it was in those old times.
At the moment we have in every bomber a supercomputer taking speed etc directly from the avionics, calculating the release point in real time and adjusting the bombsight.
I do not think, that it will be like WWIIol, were you have to take height and IAS directly from the Gauges and adjust manually the bombsight.
Here you will have to wait a few seconds.

If you drop the bombs without using the bombsight, the bombs will go the aerodynamic correct way down to earth, you just have not the slightest idea where they will hit ground by looking through the bombsight.

So if a bomber formation will drop on the sign of the pathfinder, the bombs will hit somewhere around the aimed spot, depending to th relative postion to the leading buff.
If they are higher or faster the bombs hit before the target, if they are lower or slower the bombs come shorter.

In other words, unless everybody participating in the multi-buff box mission has formation skills like the Blue Angels, not looking at the bomb sight's gonna waste a lot of good eggs before they cook.

Hmmmmm... sure hope the Lancaster gets the 3 plane formation option. I look forward to setting the delay at .5 seconds and unleashing 42 1k'ers on a busy airfield! :D :D

After Reading the new Help File for 1.10

I certainly hope this will finally put to rest the tag of
FLUFF Drivers

I enjoy flying a buff...  This new element adds the realism that I think was missing from any flight sim I have flown.

Way to go HiTech

Don't let one sour fly spoil your soup, toss it aside and keep eating! ;)

When setting the altitude of the target, is the map altitude reading 100% reliable?

So, for example, your setting your sight for a town thats on a hill, but the base is marked at sea level. Whats the setting? Sea level? Or do we need to adjust for the hill?

I know with goons, you need to adjust for hills when dropping troops. If this is the case, I hope the map will be more specific in regard to town and field altitudes.

If a multiple-player formation (use example of 12 buffs controlled by 4 players) were to drop bombs on the signal of the lead bomber, wouldn't lag issues affect the bombing accuracy of the formation?

Seems like the only way for a good formation drop would be for everyone to calibrate their bombsight based on what they were seeing on their own FE.

For the field, I believe, yes.  If the town is higher, you may want to drop a hair later, if town is lower, a hair sooner.  Seems like practice will give us all a good idea.
