100 fps by accident (on a budget)
« on: June 28, 2002, 10:05:05 PM »
Every now and then I do something right by accident.  I just put together a system like that.  I was lookiung for a good foundation to build upon more later.  So I bought (new eggegg.com)

AMD 1800 (like 100 was cheaper than slower chip becaus eit came with a fan and didnt have to pay for more shipping on fan)

256 meg SDRAM on one stick from Crucial (at first was attempting a revitalization of old AMD500 compaq)  I think was 45 bucks

ECS K7S5A motherboard  was 50 some odd dollars

Matrox hot new ATA133 40 meg HD  (remeber I looking for future upgrade - the ECS board I picked is "only" ATA100   ($90 bucks at Staples (was in a hurry)

and the big shocker the video card:

Palit Geforce2 MX 400 64 meg - again 50 some odd dollars  I opicke dthis because I wanted some speed and  when i do future upgrade I wanted to still be able do a good job of multi monitor - PCI lets you do that

This system initally installed WIN98SE in 10 MINUTES!!!

OK loaded AH then copied my old setup over my LAN over top of new install.  Ran AH frames high 30 and low 40  even 50's sometimes.  I was pleased.

Then I got a wild hair and visited Nvidia and installed the latest detonator drivers.  Hookie Smokes!  now i am 80-100fps !!!   (for little more than the latest Geforce 4 card cost!

Detonator drivers really sent things through the roof in this setup and I blame win98SE for some of it, its still a good opsys.

edit to add the onboard sound is awful but works till you get your next part - AH will receive but not transmit

Same as I was running befiore 1028x768 32 bit - was gettign low 20's frames on a P3 700 with ati 32meg card same settings.  Now I can actually see :)

edit to add:   I have not tried any other resolutions as this is the one I am used too.  SO don't have data on how it will do.
