Motherboard setting - Q?
« on: July 03, 2002, 04:59:10 PM »
Have an ASUS A7M266 mobo with an Athlon 1.4 (not an XP 1600), 256MB DDR RAM (PC2100) and a Radeon 64MB DDR.

Question, does anyone know the correct clock speed/multiplier for this combination.  ASUS only lists up to 1.2GHz on their technical docs although that motherboard is capable of accepting up to the new XP2100 CPU's.  I just can't find the specs for my combo anywhere although I'm pretty sure it is common.  I don't necessarily want to overclock it, but wouldn't mind knowing what the correct combo of settings would be to manually configure it to run at 100%.

I suspect that the auto-detect isn't running properly on it and want to set it up manually.  The package reports (any time I've seen a place to look at CPU performance) that it is only running at around 1GHz.  It is also running as cool as a cucumber, not a typical trait of AMD processors.  I suspect it is so cool because it's loafing around at 1GHz with my big CPU cooler easily wisking away the heat.

Tips?  Ideas?

Set the FSB to 133 and multiplier to 10.5.  If that doesn't work, try setting the lowest multiplier and 133 FSB, then keep stepping up the multiplier until it runs at 1.4.  Make sure that your PCI multiplier is at 1/4 when running the FSB at 133.

If you set the FSB to 133 and it doesn't boot or it runs very fast for a short period of time (hehe), your cpu might be 100 fsb / 14 multiplier, but my 1.4 athlon is 133/10.5.

You may also want to get the latest BIOS update from ASUS as it should recognize cpu speeds up past the XP-2200 now.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Updated to newest bios version and bumped it up to 1.4GHz, now it locks up on the start of Win98.  Claims a stack overflow...

Ideas?  I wonder if the chip really is a 1.4GHz.  I have the reciept saying it is but never installed it myself.  Wonder if I should pop it open and peel the heatsink off just to make sure it isn't a 1.0GHz chip in there by mistake.

Can you think of anything else to try?  Seems strange that it wouldn't boot to windows at the rated speed.  Something seems fishy with that.
