1.10 new smoke animation...
« on: July 05, 2002, 06:13:17 AM »
...is really nice. Doesn't hit the frame rate too much too, but... isn't it a bit too short ? I feel the 1.09 smokes were longer and that longer smokes looked much more realistic. This goes for all the smoke trails - rockets, fuels leaks, oil leaks and damaged engines as well as offline airshow smoke which is at least twice to short imo.

What do U think ?

I would say the smoke is now in "safe mode" so that the sky doesn't get full of smoke coming from all the planes wantint to test it or simply by damaged planes... my guess is that it will grow in length when they are certain everything's ok with it.

Personaly I don't care about the smoke issue, but one thing that really Cheeses me off is the AAA puffs they dissipate WAY to quickly.  1.09 AAA looked like the old combat footage with LOTS and LOTS of little black ACK puffs. :)   Now it is just the sound it seems like, not as "imersive". :(  BRING BACK THE ACK PUFFS!!!

Also, from a distance the smoke looks a little funny. For example, a smoking buff looks really strange from a distance. Instead of steady smoke, you get these smoke puffs that appear for a sec then disappear, over and over again. In 1.09 (and earlier) smoke viewed from a distance was steady and looked more realistic. But...smoke alone does not make or break a great sim. :)

I'm not sure if I have seen smoke from a buff in the distance yet, but are you sure you're not mistaking this with the new buff formations? Whenever I see buffs in formation from a distance, the drones do exactly what you said.

Good point. I can't be entirely sure it wasn't a formation, since I did not try to intercept (again, it was far away and very high). If it was a formation then it's still a visual detail that can (and probably will be) improved.

Case in point: I remember back in the days of beta, when far-off aircraft "dots" were quite large, in fact they may have all been the same size (too big). It did not take long for updates to come along that fixed that situation.

HT said in MA that longer trails would hurt FR too much.
