Cya'll later!
« on: July 08, 2002, 01:37:28 AM »
Taking a break from this for a while.  Not sure what is happening, but either my connex or something in the server is screwy.
Light an FM-2 up with 50 cals from a P47, a sustained burst, and he flies on with no damage.  Same guy had just gotten hammered with 20mm from one of my countrymen.  Punch line:  He ended up getting kills after all this, told me he had no damage whatsoever.  Not sure if packet loss is involved, or what, but at this point all I am doing is getting pissed when I play.  Maybe it's the change in ISP from DSL to wireless.  I just don't know.
Anyway, I'm gonna take time to get things done here in the new home that need my attention far worse than this.
to the AK's on the new map, and hats off to HTC for what I think is the best release yet.
to all the guys I've met online and learned to respect.  I'm sure I'll be around from time to time.  But the passion to play the game is gone for me, and there is no clear reason why, nor anyone to blame.
Good luck and happy hunting all!

The servers are really crappy lately, but I suspect its not an HTC issue; anything linked to AT&T is getting lots of lag, Battle.net for example.

Had a P47 light me up good in my fm2 (leftfoot I think).  I would guess I took three or four good salvoes but not a really sustained burst.  I didnt get any damage as a result and reversed the frustrated P47 and lit him up good killing him in the normal amount of sustained 50 cal hits.  Was odd but Ive seen this before over the years.  Rarely happens twice in a row however.  In any event, worth keeping an eye on in case damage model for fm2 is porked.

Ive had excellent connects this past week and the P47 looked stable as well.  Was a good fight, from my seat ;)

My connect has been really good as well. Those FM-2s are a beatch though. ManTMP managed to avoid my bursts on numerous passes. He totally faked me and escaped but I know I got a few pings in. I extended and went looking for another kill. If strange stuff starts to happen, I always disengage and look for another fite. If possible.

Uh eddiek,...if you are using a satellite link, you will never be able to play without frustration.  Not just AH, but any real-time Internet game/sim.

You have a built-in lag of up to 3 seconds (i.e. every packet being sent to you will have up to 3 seconds of delay added from the time it is sent from any server) with a satellite connection.  Thus garanteeing you lousy real-time service.

That is just the way it is.

I suspected that was a lot of the problem.  No DSL where I am, only dialup or cable, or what I have, wireless.
Dialup, takes too long to get the updates and downloads.  Cable, not sure if the lag issue is present there also.  Wireless, downloads are not as fast as DSL, but still faster than a dialup, but unplayable obviously.
What would you recommend?

Cable works great for most and is far better than any of the wireless ISPs I've seen.

Cable would be better than wireless.

Dunno, I'm on 802.11 wireless (not satellite) and get around 45-105ms delays depending on net wierdness....

Dialup works fine for me as far as playability goes. And thats with a max 26,400 connex. eek! I'm betting a dialup connex would be far better than wireless connex for online gaming.
I understand your frustration with downloads though as a slow dialup connex can be a real drag.

Good luck

There must be some stable wireless providers somewhere, just haven't seen any in this area. I haven't tried it but I have customers that have.

Maybe that "net wierdness" you're seeing is really "wireless wierdness"?

Eddie, if you can afford it, get both dial-up and keep your wireless connx.

There's more opportunity for your signal to get corrupted/intefered with on wireless than on a shielded connection (telephone line, cable, DSL, etc)...

Use the dial-up to play AH (I play on a dial-up and it's perfectly fine for me), and use wireless to d/l the updates.

If it ain't reliable, it ain't no good for gaming... and that goes for DSL AND cable too since companies LOVE to oversell their connection limits in neighborhoods.

Here is the problem I and my cube mate are having with cable at the moment.  We both are ATTBI customers and are happy so long as ATTBI has capacity.   However, every few weeks it seems like, one of the routers we pass through reaches capacity.  At that point ATTBI seems to turn on some sort of packet caching "feature" which results in one of the upstream routers saving up packets and then sending them out in a large burst instead of simply trickling them out in the form of a slower connect.  The result is periods of insane lag which is fatal to any sort of game play from AH to EQ.  This problem persists for a week or a month until ATTBI adds capacity.
