Am I missing something here?
« on: June 01, 2000, 12:10:00 AM »
Have you ever pondered the sanity of your countrymen?

Tonight me and a couple other countrymen came up with a lose plan. We were gonna take A27. There were low enemy fighters around, but we had good fighter cap, so it seemed doable.

I was orbiting the field in a B17 making passes on the hangars, the ack was already down. We had a goon enroute, everything seemed to be progressing nicely. After 2 or 3 passes on the hangars I notice our goon nearby, about that time I see the hangars are all down and call for the goon on country channel to drop the drunks, nothing.

Assuming he discoed, I get on country channel, "Help at 27, we need a goon, will anybody volunteer?" (or something to that effect) nothing.

I tell the other bomber that I'm gonna auger and grab a goon. I get on private channel with him and get updates as I was enroute.(forgot his handle, but he was a big help) I get close to the field and my spotter in the buff has picked up a con or something, he said he was BZ (understandable). So I get on country channel again with the usual kinda stuff, "how is 27?" "Any cons nearby?, updates guys?" nothing.

There were some of our guys over the friggin' field that just didn't answer for whatever reason.

So I keep asking for updates as I'm making my approach, with no response I get my goon close to the field slide it in front of the map room, and there is a GD Panzer sitting right next to the front door that readily puts his main gun to my ass.

I don't usually get mad at people in the game, but Good Grief, is it that hard to just say "I don't know" ??

I know we don't all want to take bases every time we log on and I wasn't asking anybody too, I was just asking a couple of simple questions, and couldn't get any response. Driving a goon is not the funnest thing in the world, but when your countrymen don't even care to help, it really sux.

Fellas, you can have the best strategy game there is, but if the game is played by people who don't give a rats arse about the strategy, all that programming is for naught.

I might get roughed up and kicked out of ****land for this, <G> but I just HAD to get this one off my chest.

hblair,
That's happened to me on several occasions, but I've always chalked it up to,
  • I can't speak their language, and they can't speak English.
  • Things are too involved for them to notice the text buffer.
  • Someone is a little miffed about something, and cooling off.
  • Some are loners.
Like chute-shooting, I've really become accustomed to lack of communication at times.  Not all the time, but most of the time.

Most times I get online I'll kind of 'test the air' by saying, "hi all!," then see what sort of response comes.  If there are responses, I'll ask what's up, but if the responses are nil, then I figure on 'loning it'.

But, ya, it can get old, hblair.

Totally agree with ya blair. That stuff happens all the time. It is especially frustrating when ya bringen in a gooner and there is like a bunch of our guys around the tgt and ya cant get a sitrep at all. I hear ya!

Alot of folks fly together using RW and when they do usually the radio text ends up getting ignored.

That was a pretty good summary of my experiences flying goons.

Hi hblair....

It is simply the nature of an MA that contains a mixed flying skill set from newbies to veterans, all with varied interest levels of realism expectations.

With the advent of terrain creation tools, improved CM tools and a mission planner, the more coordinated squad and HA type flying you're looking for will emerge.

Until then, do what I do.  Simply wade into the MA and ignore any realism issues and expect support only when it is of interest to the current group who are there when you arrive.

Regards,
Badger

Funny thing was..

The country channel was active. I was just flat out ignored for some reason.

Another thing that cracks me up...

I was flying goon a week or so ago, a field was prepped for capture, I was almost there. I was to the north, a couple of bad guys in fighters, and one of our fighters was to the south. I tell our guy not to kill 'em, just drag 'em further south so I can drop the troops. Naturally, he dives in and kills two of 'em, they respawn as I'm getting to the field and they kill me.

I've lost most captures at the last second because of my own countryman. I guess I'm gonna have to grow my squad bigger and just do these things within the squad.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big field capture guy, haven't even took one this whole last tour, prolly have 4 sorties in goons, but I would fly them more if I knew I had help.

When I go in I look at what is happening; sometimes I will pitch into the defense or offense, sometimes I will do my own thing.

As far as the goon thing is concerned, I have learned this; don't count on anyone. Do it yourself, start to finish, and if people help, great, if not, great too. I don't get mad this way.   Never assume that anyone has a field prepped, as it is amazing the number of people that don't realize that an open vehicle hangar is tantamount to a death sentence to an incoming goon (ironic, given the ridiculous ease by which Vhangars can be strafed down).

By the way my friend, I forgot to mention that the next time you're in the MA and this Baby Harp Seal is also there, I'd be happy to fly and support you in whatever capacity you need.  Gunner, Air Cap, Escort, Recon...let me know.
