I run Aces High (when I am on the road) on a Dell 8100 series insprion with a P3 1200 and the ATI 7500  Radeon Mobility Chip. I am very happy with this setup, I run it at 1024X768 and get frames around 45 to 50 fps. The only down side is its a very heavy laptop think its around nine pounds.

New Dell Inspiron 8200

I finally took the plunge on a Dell Inspiron 8200.  I'm trying to get it setup to take to the CON. I like the machine, but I'm still having some difficulties optimizing for AH and getting my CH USB Combatstick, Pro Throttle, and Pro Pedals to accept programming from control manager.  I had no problem with these USB controls on my Athlon Win 98SE machine.

Inspiron 8200
P4 1.8Ghz
Win XP Home Edition
512MB RAM
Gforce 4 GoVideo 64MB
Ultra-sharp 15" screen
fast 40GB HD
CD-R/W DVD Rom
integrated modem and NIC
CH USB Controls thru USB Hub

Using (when on the move) Dell Inspiron 8000 with PIII 1GHz, 512MB Crucial and GF2Go 32MB. Great rig. I get 2220 3D Marks 2001SE (can't remember the drivers but think it's 28.80). AH, WB2.77 and III, IL2 - all highly flyable. FPS are not those I get on my main box but all is smooth and working. 2 USB ports are just enough for a mouse and MS FFB - I can't quite picture myself dragging CH setup around:D.

I'd highly recommend Dell to anyone. It's the only laptop I came across (and I've seen a few) that actually allows upgrading to a degree. Memory - they use bog-standard Crucial 144 pin SODIMMs. Harddrives - IBM TravelStars: upgraded 10GB for 30GB recently in less then 5 minutes, one screw and out comes old drive (I'm still wondering where my gf's Vaio's hardrive is hidden...). Got a spare GF2Go 32MB module on E-bay for £10... In case I'll screw mine with o/clocking;) . When prices on GF4s come down I'll try to fit it in:p .

Their aftersales and technical support do suck though, at least here, in the UK. But as far as hardware is concerned - Dell have certainly got it right.

YMMV of course ;)

I've got a Toshiba Satellite 5100-201 which cost £1999.99 from Dixons. I bought it with the insurance money when I wrote me motorbike off. It's a P4 1.6 Ghz, 384Mb RAM with a Gforce 440Go vid card and Yamaha XG sound system. It runs AH really well in terms of FR with everything maxed. I've still got 2 problems to sort out though,
1) using a Wireless NIC to connect to the net gives me a lot of packet loss, so things warp a bit.
2) I get mini freezes, usually when a sound loads ( like the noise of your tail falling off usually!) which I haven't managed to solve.

I've found that by the time I've settled in a chair with a tray on my lap as a stable base, plugged the JS in to the mains and the USB port and adjusted my beer so I can reach it without moving.... I need a wee so have to get up again.

Other than that, its fine.

PS My wife used to moan that I spent too long locked in the computer room playing AH, now I sit next to her on the sofa and play AH instead. I grunt now and then whilst she tells me about her day.

Lynx,

I leave for the USA in three days, and I'm just getting the idea of what hauling my USB CH stuff is going to be like.  My pedals, stick, and throttle in their original boxes just about fill out an expandable 29" rolling suitcase.  Let's see, then there's my laptop as my carry on... What am I forgetting?  DOH! I'm gonna need another suitcase for clothing and shaving kit. DAMN this Aces High addiction!!!!!

Ddriag,

How you been? I get those mini-freezes too on my Dell.  Not always, more like the first time there is an explosion of a plane in front of me or something else visually dynamic.  maybe it's some sort of caching issue?  I'm running win XP. What OS are you using?

Jo, I'm running WinXP on my laptop. I suspect the Yamaha AC-XG soundcard is not up to scratch.

when I run DXdiag and click on 'Test Directsound' under the sound tab it gives me a box which says

"Your Soundcard does not support hardware buffering. Sounds will only play back from software buffers"

It passes the tests fine, but I think that's what me problem is.
