Just rang up Demon and apparently they're switching to a BT Surftime-type deal by the end of this month... so it's probably safe to say that other half-decent ISPs will follow too. In the meantime I wouldn't bother with BT Free or any of that, since it's damn unreliable and I can only connect at 30kbps...

Bah. Picked the worst time to sign up to a free ISP, 1 week before everything else goes free.. ho hum

Duma, there are Hundreds of free ISP's Myself, I am on RHA (www.redhotant.co.uk) and it works FINE 85% of the time... it sometimes takes time to connect (5-10 tries) but when I am connected I don't have more Discoes than any other paying ISP...

50£/Y  24/7 is not bad...

I have an account with RedHotAnt and NTL, RHA is not reliable all the time and NTL has a 2 hour cut-off time (RHA's is 3 hours) but NTL is rock solid all the time for me. I don't think you have to be an NTL subscriber either, I think if you ring them and ask for a disk they send you a plug-in dongle to switch calls from your BT point through NTL's exchange instead. The only catch is you have to use £10 worth of non internet calls per month.

Cable Modem is here in Cardiff but I can't justify the expense now I have un-metered access, download sizes are'nt a problem when you're not counting the minutes and you have a program like Getright to resume downloads and hang up when its done. It would be nice to have, perhaps in the future for me when cable modem and ADSL are a little less pricey.

I haven't had the same problems with BT - I usually connect at 42 - 46.  I also use RHA but it seems ages to be able to connect.  I often use that after midnight or during the day.

I'll look forward to the new Demon price plan, but if my memory is correct then a lot of ISPs are going free during the months of June and July.  Fingers crossed!

I did think BT Surftime was going to be a dead duck but hopefully Demon will be the first of many "Decent ISP's to enrol.

Contrary to most peoples experiences I find BT the most reliable of the Free ISP's (1st time connect every time & no disco's for the 2 hour time limit) but high latency times mean it's next to useless for gaming

Wish I had Saw's experiences with RHA. Once I connect it's great although I generally find connect's of 46+ to be unreliable. If I see I am connected at about 42K It's usually fine, but getting a connection?..... Crap! I frequently see "Dialing attempt 75+" before getting online, But it is getting better

Like life in general you get what you pay for. I still use the likes of "strayduck" & "IC24" - (1p per min), for Ladder Duels and Scenarios etc because at the moment they are still streaks ahead (Both in speed and quality of connection) of any of the "free" ISP's (In my opinion).

It's a steep learning curve for all the free ISP's in the UK at the moment and I am sure our American friends still pay for thier connection in most cases. A lot of the ISP's jumping on the band-wagon won't be around in 12 months or so, But hopefully the ones that are left will at least provide a decent service.

As a side issue..... And as this is aimed at the UK

Anyone else planning on going to Duxford for the "Flying Legends" Warbirds show? I'm taking my dad (76th B'day pressie) on the Sunday - Anyone else???

I know what you mean about trying to get connections with RHA   pain in the arse! As for connection speed I have two extra dial-up's setup using my RHA and NTL accounts set to connect at a lower speed, try 38400 baud for a stable connect.

Yeah Snafu, I should hopefully be making it for the Duxford 'Flying Legends' airshow - I got the video of last years and it looked really impressive - about 40 planes in formation at one point!

I'll be in touch!

I've never had any probs with the 'free' BT internet set-up, and have good connection rates.
Have you guys tweaked yer modems? I followed the very useful tips here : http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/modem/  and it has made a difference. Go have a look and see what you think.
