canjun,
Flight time does not equal range. True, the Gladiator could stay airborne for longer, but it only had a range of 440 miles. The Spitfire Mk XIV had a range of 850 with drop tanks and about 600 without. The Spitfire Mk I had a range of about 500 miles.
Getting to the fight counts for more than time in the air, in my opinion.
True, but you are comparing a 1939 (well when the war started, though it had allready been in service a few years) to a late war spit 14, it did actuelly have a longer range then the spitfire I (spit fireI having a range of 395 compared to gladiators 440).
As well as having near twice the firing time of the hurriI and spitI, though it had half the guns, I have also heard Gladiators could carry bombs as well, but not sure if this is true or not.
