Sad Story and a Gun Question

I bought a sig p229 a few months ago as many of you know. I went on a trip to wash. D.C last month with it packed in the back of the van. We stopped in knoxville and I had to get in the luggage, well, unbeknownst to me, I left my sig in its case on the roof of the van (real smart huh?). Well, get to truckin up the interstate about 70mph and I hear a kerplonk kerplonk, look in the rear view and see the gun case bounce up about 5 feet, come open, gun comes out, four clips including the 2 pre-ban 12 round deals, luckily it all scatters towards the right into the grass.

I get over and back up to the scene of carnage. It took me about 15 minutes to find the gun. I figured it'd be beyond repair but surprisingly the only thing wrong was the slide was scratched and the left grip was cracked. One of the pre-ban clips is still on the side of the interstate somewhere, it was elusive. The slide looked terrible, so I polished the thing. Got it looking pretty good now. My brother said the slide being polished would hurt the value of the gun. I might be saling this thing soon and seeings how I spent over 500 incl. tax and all I want to get out of it as much as I can. Will the slide being polished hurt the value that much?

Ouch HB...sorry to hear about that.  Am glad everything turned out OK.

I've heard that polishing or altering a collectible firearm may decrease the value...the thinking here being a certain weapon may qualify as a work of art, or have some history associated with it.

Otherwise, go ahead and polish out the scratches, or have a machine shop do it for you if you know somebody who will do it for you.  The broken grip can be replaced easily.

You were lucky in many ways mate.  Accidents can and do happen to all of us...its the human factor.  Btw, it's a good idea to check the gun laws when transporting hand guns especially.  I've heard Wash. D.C. has the strictest hand gun laws in the country.

Moral of the story is:  Unless there is a need, don't bring along a pistol.  It's more hassle than it's worth.   You have to always be thinking about it.

if you bought it new, then you've knocked down the value a bit but if it was already used, everything funtions and all scratches ect came out it shouldn't be that bad.  hell just firing a new gun the first time takes about 10% off the value.  sigs are good quality guns that hold their value well so if you didn't tear it up to bad you should be alright.

what the hell you want to sell your gun for anyway?  guns are for buying not for selling(unless somebody offers more than you paid for it )

hehe Animal.   I have an H&K USP 45 and would be in worse shape than you!!   If it was new than yeah I'd say a bit of the value is knocked down a bit.

Hey, check out http://www.robarguns.com  This finish might be a solution too.  They have the best finishes and it might cut your loss a bit.

BTW, depending on the amount of polishing done and the amount of rounds through it you may be down in the 250-300 range.

ya thee are lots of people who do refinishing..althougth this might be the same price you will rnd up selling it for is how much it costs you to refinsh your slide...

Not many things you can launch from atop your vehicle on the highway that won't depriciate in value.

If it cleans up decent... It will be worth less... but it should still fire just as well.

The retail shop/range where my office is attached sells a bottle for about 40$ Canadian large enough to refinish a pistol, and I did my m203 launcer with it, and it looks brand new.  Like out of the box new, and it was a beat-down Israeli surplus item that got handed down to me.  If you have even basic painting/modelling skills and an oven you can bake a pistol in without the wife flipping out, you're off to the races.  If not, I'm sure a local gunsmith can sort you out for a small fee, it's a very easy task to perform.

Call a local smith and ask them about it, as it is pretty easy to strip a pistol down, and you likely will get away with just refinishing the slide by the sounds of it, and I've seen Sig P220's redone with this stuff, and it's amazing how good they look, even after people have "polished" them beforehand to repair damage such as yours.
