AMD cpu will not display JPEGs
« on: July 11, 2002, 01:51:51 AM »
I just bought a 1.4Ghz AMD Tbird off eBay and it plays AH fine and runs through 3D Mark2001 without any hicups.
However, whenever I try to display jpeg files they come up corrupted, almost like they are encrypted. It happens off-line or online while browsing.
From the people who I bought the computer from, KickAss Gear, I got this link:
http://www.gordonfamily.com/AMD/

Has anyone ever seen this problem or error? I did talk to AMD tech support and he asked "does the die have any small chips or cracks on it? That usually caused jpeg issues." I had to put my BS boots on for that answer. I looked and sure enough there is a small ding on one of the corners, but I do not think that is causing my headaches. I can send it to AMD for a test-out but I believe they will say the small chip in the die is the cause of the problem and give me the brush-off.
Does anyone have a contact inside AMD that I could get in contact with??
Thanks for any advice offered,
fuzeman

I have a degree in electrical engineering.  Take it from me, there is no part of a CPU that handles .jpg files that you can "chip off." :D  It is true that the Tbird Athlons did chip easily if you weren't careful mounting the heatsink and fan.  If the chip was bad enough the CPU could be damaged and require replacement.

(I've got to remember this one.  That's got to be the funniest thing I've read in a while. :) )

Interesting link.  What they say may be true, but that flaw would be present in the processor from the day it was new.  You could not have caused it.  A chip on the CPU die would not cause this problem to appear at some later time.  MMX instructions are executed in the same execution units as many other instructions.  If somehow that unit was damaged, ALL integer and MMX instructions would not execute.  Beyond that, the system would not boot at all.

I would contact AMD and get a replacement CPU.

AMD K6-2 CPUs and Athlon/Duron CPUs (K7) are totally different designs.  The fact that this problem was present on both indicates the problem is a manufacturing defect.  I'd like to find a Thunderbird die photo to show you were the ALU and FPU units are on an Athlon die.

I'd never heard of this problem until now.  It must have been a very small number of CPUs.

My CPU died a few days ago and I am using a replacement Athlon that has the same problem. All jpegs look garbled unless I open them in MSPaint.
Its not a problem with the OS or the video card, its the CPU.
Even tried it on a different computer. Everything else works fine, it just cant see jpegs.

Windows XP
Linux Mandrake 8.1

Strange thing is that the CPU used to work perfectly. One day, it just didnt work well with jpegs.

Definately no virus here either.
I received an e-mail from AMD tech support today with shipping instructions and it mentions a one-time courtesy replacement. I guess I'll go that route and see what happens. If all else fails KickAs Gear offered to buy it for testing and maybe do an atrticle on it.
I did get sort of 'snippy' in one of my e-mails to AMD and also mentioned the original case number, found in the GordonFamily site. I hope the case number did the trick and he forgets my snippy-ness.... otherwise I'll get a pile of sand in return.

Animal, thats the first thing I've heard that might mean it IS something besides the inadequate QA in the chip. [Be quiet LoL]
Heck, talk to AMD support, if they see 2 of these comin in, maybe YOU can get a new cpu also.

hmmm read somewhere is it a paraler < ilagal > market for  chips  CPU s ,memory s ,  they try sell not tested or not pased stuff ,  so no wonder if the stuff not workin corectly, about jpeg, well is it a cabled rutine in MMX instructions, so manufacturing defects posible but crackin the stuff? it depend whych layer , they have 3 or so ? do no exactly

never havde this problem so cant tell why you have it :(
