Complacency will be your biggest enemy. Why arent the Romans, the Mongols, The Spanish, the Dutch, Napolean and the Brits still ruling the world?
All of them were Super Powers once. Many ruling more of the world than the US has control or allegiances with now. At this time in our history, the US is the greatest Military Power on earth but what would it take to bring them down?
The US is powerful but only as powerful as its alliances. It will give someone a huge kick in the prettythang and a bloody nose but short of including itself in self annhilation, it cant take on the world by itself.
Rome: fell because its empire was larger than its lines of communication. They split into an eastern half and a western half. Fractured and fell to local denizens of the territory (ie feudal lords). And having crazy leaders that couldn't lead their way out a paper bag didn't help either.
Mongols: Can't comment - not part of my school curriculum.
Spanish: got caught up with religious zealotry and then had their fleet smashed on the shores of the English Channel (or thereabouts). No fleet, no control of the seas, no superpower for you!
The Dutch: they were a superpower?
Napoleon: it took the Duke of Windsor and the timely arrival of the Prussian army to knock him back, and even then he didn't stay down. Too bad he was working with a peasant government that was clueless.
Britain: Managed to retain their empire for a respectable amount of time. Some (cough, cough, Argentina, cough) would say they're still a superpower to be reckoned with (hello, welcome to the Falklands).
What would it take to bring the US down?
Another big Depression (check the stock market today?), coupled with an energy crisis (cough, cough Saudi Arabia, cough, Iraq, cough, Venezuela, cough, cough), and war (Iraq, North Korea, Libya to name a few hotspots). Nothing kills a country faster than losing money, raw materials, and military presence. As the Soviet Union has proven, you can kill a country without a war and without an energy crisis if it can lose enough money.
That was the al Queyda's plan when they dropped 2 jumbo jets on New York.
