My view of the crude language...
« on: July 14, 2002, 06:43:00 PM »
Well...it being a long day at work, I was thinking about the thread on crude language, and what can be done to curve this.

Well...in my opinion, what can be done requires no time or programing. The thing few understand is the reason WHY people swear online. Just like in reality, swearing for no reason accomplishes nothing, just as it does here.

Think about it...why would someone swear online? I'll use my school as an example. Swearing in such places is an attempt by the person to either a.) act cool or b.) push someone's buttons. Here, it seems that those who cannot handle the fighting and/or furballing will swear, seeming as they usually can't do one thing such as fighting. This boosts their ego, as they feel better about themselves knowing they put someone else down.

The other is the type that simply enjoys getting on someone else's nerves. They love seeing other people angry, and enjoy it more if they are the ones that caused it in the first place. These are the guys who will swear until they turn blue...as long as they make someone mad.

Both of these example thrive off of one thing, which is responses. Respnses is what drive these people to their own euphoria. They are the real attention starved people. The more attention they get, the better they feel, knowing that everyone is stirred up because of them.

So here's my Not So Time Consuming solution. Ignore them. And I mean totally. No "Shut up..."...no "Piss off.." nothing. The less these people hear the less they swear. It's a fact. If they know that they cannot get on your nerves, then the game is no longer fun. I know we've said squelch them, but this seems to be along the same lines.

Don't give them the attention they thrive on, they go away...simple as that. I know this is a long waste of letters but it was just something I thought of at work.

And anyways...it's just IMO...;)

I disagree.  Being a jerk in a consequence free environment has its own rewards.

IMHO, the biggest problem is people who try to antagonize and cause disruption. Some will go to extremes to accomplish this. Squelching them isn't always a solution, and no player should be expected to give up the use of a radio channel because some jerk is causing trouble. HTC has been very affective in dealing with these people.

But when it comes to everyday language, I think it's best for the players to police themselves. They can set their own standards for behavior in the arena at any given time, instead of expecting HTC to wetnurse them. But they must have the tools to do so. There must be an expectation for the offending player to comply to a complaint, as in a Rules of Conduct (including other prohibitions as HTC sees fit). Of course, there will be times when complaining players are unreasonable and can cause more trouble than the person who said poopy head (vulgarity isn't the only cause of disruption). In such cases there needs to be a moderator available to sort things out.

funny thing while reading all these posts...
you all mean cussing right :D
swearing is what you do on the witness stand:D
anyway IMHO you missed a part of your point....
some people know no other way to express their feelings without cussing. small minds lead to small vocabulary:)
like everyday talk....
she was !@#$ hot!
that @!#$ cut me off!
my @#$% boss is an idiot!
whatever and so on. we all do it (even the kids on the bus to school)
i dont think it (cussing) has a place every where... but i kind of consider this game like HBO... you pay for a service.
dont get me wrong, i dont think the MA should be a @#$% fest on channel 1 it's just that the solution is alot tougher than we all think.
just because some simian dork has no way to speak eloquently or some kid thinks he's being tough should he not be allowed to speak?
we can censor public domains (though is that really a good idea?) ((WOW i do have liberal thoughts!!))but this isn't a public domain.

just 1 man's opinion.... yes they are like #@$%#@$ everyone's got 1:D
I don't know what to put here yet.
