Thinking of coming back
« on: July 16, 2002, 12:14:08 PM »
Greetings all,
I am an old Air Warrior, and played Aces High for about 2 years... I moved over to World War 2 online early this year and really enjoy the infantry portion of this game.. but trying to fly in that game just isn't any fun for me... I see that Aces High has made alot of additions and improvements... what has changed since last summer? Is it worth checking out again? Is the CMC still flying?? Mig are you out there LOL???
About 6 months ago I downloaded and played H2H briefly.. I LOVE the graphics and sounds, but H2H isn't a good comparison ..
I'm just wondering if anyone else has made the move to WWIIONLINE and then came back to Aces High.... looking for your opinions...

I really miss flying my A-8.... :)  and WWIIONLINE is beginning to look like World War ONE online... still fun to shoot people with a rifle, but that's about it... :)

I didn't play AH beforehand, but I did leave WWIIOL to come here.  The new map and bomber model take getting used to, but I'd still say that this is by far the best sim in town.

I tried WWIIOnline some time ago. Like you I liked the ground game but found the air war sorely lacking.

With the new Aces High terrain there are a lot more gv fights. The ground war doesn't look as pretty as WWIIOnline but can be a lot of fun nonetheless.

There is a CT that has historic matchups that are rotated on a weekly basis. There are a/c that are actually competitive with one another (unlike over there), and more are coming all the time (also unlike over there).

"Soon" really means soon here.

Questions posed here are answered respectfully and directly without the obtuse "I know but I ain't tellin'" flavor.

When something is broken it generally is fixed immediately- though some will argue minor points for a long time afterward (really questioning modeling).

Integrated voice communication simplifies team activity.

Check Six on keystroke is helpful.

Pouring even .303 ammo into a target will produce predictable and ultimately performance-degrading damage on an enemy.

A smoking engine means it's time to land in most planes.

The developers don't tell you to "Deal with it" and "We can't help it if you are too dumb or lazy to learn to use what we give you properly".

There are planes representing the full spectrum of the war, from beginning to end.

...just off the top of my head...

True enough, but the preponderance of the posts are much more mature- but that isn't what it's about, really.

For a flight sim enthusiast, WWIIOL just doesn't do it. There is no particular use for bombers now, there are serious questions about damage model, and there are performance issues that hinder realistic play even if it did exist. Fighter combat is pretty much a matter of CAS and anti-CAS, or vultch. The disparity of capability on the respective sides, while arguably historic in a distorted sense (critical missing opponents will always prevent realism), it is decidedly un-fun to play. Plans to address the omissions are always discussed, but after a year don't appear any closer to happening than when the game started. The new planes we were told would be here "soon" were admitted by Hatch to not even being begun at this point. This adds up to another 6 month wait if the current development cycle pace remains the same, and there doesn't seem to be any reason to believe it won't. This means flying will remain un-fun for the forseeable future.

AH is nothing more than it is advertised to be; a flight combat sim based on WWII. Its members tend to be far more knowledgeable of WWII history than most of the posters on the WWIIOL forums, and tend to be able to conduct discussions based on historical fact. Yup, there are exceptions, but they aren't nearly as prevalent as over there.
