You're having a laugh ain't ya. Realism is the issue. It doesn't have to be hard to be realistic. During the BOB pilots (From all nationalities) were being thrown into combat with less hours experience than it takes to pass a driving test. The fact that so many survived is testiment to the fact that WWII fighters were easy (Relatively) to fly. They would never of made it into production otherwise. You don't knowingly put your most valuable resource (Pilots) into something that's likely to get them killed because it has inferior flying flying ability to the enemy.

as to my knowledge more F4Us and their pilots for that mater were lost to accidents than to enemy fire ...

I've seen people crash C150s, C172 and ground loop Piper Cubs .. not exactly POWER Monsters all of them... i'd dare to climb into a WW2 Warbird with the experience these people had .. and I think it was merly desperation that made their countries put them in these airplanes with that experience ....

What I mean is that the old and new systems for mapping joystick movement to control surface movement are both equally flawed.  It's not possible to duplicate the behavior of the real system on a standard joystick.  

So you have to make a compromise - choose a region of stick travel that will be "porked".  The old system porked the end points of stick travel, and the new system will pork the center point.

RAF pilots had ~20 hours of P1 (heard an ex-RAF pilot talking on Discovery Channel) before they were sent into combat but I doubt that it was "ease of flying" that sent them up.

On the other hand I don't think it was desperation either. People who made decisions weren't very smart or caring from what I've read/heard.

They were the same people who refused to give chutes to pilots during WW1 saying that it would encourage the pilot to abandon his plane at the first sight of trouble...

I watched a BoB programme the other week and one pilot had 8hrs flying time, of which only 45 mins was in the Hurricane that he was about to fly!
