Fix my VOX, Win a Prize....
« on: July 17, 2002, 03:05:05 PM »
Alright, I'm sick of my Vox sucking prettythang. My squad can't understand me and I'm sick of it. So here's the deal. Whoever posts the fix to my problem will win a cool prize.

What's the prizes?

Glad you asked:

Winners choice: 1 WWII Aircraft gauge (No idea what kind it is, but I have it)

or

5 of my best WWII era Insignia Pins (French)

or

A set of 5 WWII and later patches. (Air Force, Army, Marines...)

So what's the problem?

Glad you asked. VOX has very high backround static, almost overwhelming my voice, no matter how high I turn up my mike. I can hear others just fine. Some can hear me alright, most can't.

What am I using? Glad you asked.

Dell Dimesion 1.9 Gig Processor
256 Mgs Ram
Santa Cruz Turtle Beach Sound card (Second one. Brand new)
Cable Modem
One of the latest Nvidia Ge-force Video Cards.
Headset w/Boom Mic from Radioshack (Also second one, brand new.)

So. Fix my little glitch and pick your prize!

(Yes, I'm very bored)

Have you tried.... double clicking on the speaker icon in the taskbar (lower right hand) and clicking "options"->"properties"->select recording->click OK->click "options" again->select advanced controls-> click on the advanced button that will show up in the microphone area (of the current display after selecting advanced controls)-> messing around with bass/treble/selecting mic boost/etc?

Worth a shot anyways.

That and plug in a cheap soundblaster MIC and try it.

I used to have a guy we'd play online with who sounded just like that. I told him to get a $5 - $10 hoopty mic. "But mine costs alot!" just like that hag in the movie "Misery" and the typing paper.

Come to think of it, I'm sure it was a radio shack model.

So, keep yer patches, just convert the Lan cockpit plans to inches from mm, and a nice printable version. Nice job on that btw.

Muck buddie ...

Is your headset wire near any type of power source, besides your computer ?

It sounds like there is electrical static interference on the line. I have seen this when installing speaker wires that are too close to an electrical source and there is some sort of spill over interference. If the wire was shielded better or moved away from any electrical sources that are near by it might solve the problem.

I think that bloom would really be the guy who might have the solution to this.

Try recording something using the windows sound recorder, see if the static is there.  If it is, it's most likely your mic.  Also, if you have programs such as battlecom or rw, or any program that uses the mic open, they tend to cause issues like that.

I don't need a prize, but maybe try muting the mic?  it is under sound properties, don't know if that'll help but i hope it does.

also, try moving your mic cable away from power cables and such, that can make it get static-y.

If it has a mic. boost ucheck it. Some have a 20dbg boost in mic adv tab. I know when i use RogerWilco i had to uncheck it for better sound quality.

Just checked my volume control and i found that i had the Mute box checked also along with the 20dB boost box. I thought if it was checked that the mic. would be muted but it seems to work anyways.

I'm sure you have already checked this but if not give it a go.

learn something new everyday.

MUCMAW, the problem is not your computer, it is your microphone.

You mic is of the wrong 'impeedance' for your sound card.

Please refer to your sound card manual for what Ohm impedence microphone is reccomended. Regretably you may need to purchase a new one. For AH, a $5 mic is fine.

Tried it. No dice. I did discover, though, that I get the same backround noise in sound recorder as in AH, so it's not a VOX issue.
