I chose this OS mainly for its reputation as the gamers workhorse. Surfing around, I noticed that both, the new Fighter Ace, and Mush Birds 3 , require Win98SE or newer in there min. system requirements.  I am hardly inclined to change out my whole OS just to test drive these games. I suspect there are more than a few around, like me. What were these guys thinking?

I dont get what your rant is about.
You are seem to be mad that the games are built for Windows 98 or higher, but that is your OS of choice

uhh, as long as you've kept your system up to date, those games would probably run on win95.

Very often minimum system requirements are there so that when some handsomehunk calls in with a broken win95 system that hasnt been updated in years, they don't have to try and support it.

SE was the bug fixes, you should first get all the critiacl updates for win98 and think about getting the 20 dollar CD of win98SE.

Apparently there is a language problem.  Let me put it differently.  AH and IL2 both run fine on Win98. As do a number of other games.   Everything else I do with my computer works fine with Win 98.  What is the advantage/need for Win98SE.

There shouldn't be any difference in support for Win98 and Win98SE.  They both go to the same level of DirectX and use the same drivers.

Have you tried running these games?

Now, Win95 would be a different story...

(BTW, WinXP is the best general purpose OS now)

Win98 vs Win98SE

I don't know about what is still available, as I noticed that Microsoft is quickly removing support for any OS other than XP.  There used to be free downloads to win98 and after all the updates were applied the difference between win98 and win98SE was the Internet Conection Sharing.

Sharing a dial up connection shouldn't do a thing for the game.  Soooo, my guess is they listed Win98SE as minimum requirement so they wouldn't have to teach support people how to support OS-es that hadn't been updated.

Win98 really isnt that great anymore.
Win2k killed it for the most part on newer systems, winxp now is finishing it off.  Driver support for 2k and XP is as good or better than win98(With the odd exception of some joysticks)

One of the greatest things though, when a game freezes up and forces you to reboot in win98, in xp/2k control-alt-delete will close it without any hassles.

win98se was the last decent OS M$ put out. the 1st edition is not too different from SE, except it has a lot of the same crappy networking software as 95.  until a few months ago i was in the tech support biz for M$ and can tell you from 1st hand knowledge that win98 is still the most popular (OK, most widley used) OS out there and anyone trying to sell (soft/hard)ware who doesn't support win98 is missing a huge chunk of the market

What exactly does Windows XP offer for the gamer that Windows '98 doesn't have?  In other words, what current game would run on XP and not run on Win '98?

I have a feeling, knowing M$' predatory nature, that they will use Direct X to leverage XP.  Either version 9 or 10 will probably be XP-only.  Then when a poplular game comes out that requires DX 10, a lot of people will be forced to migrate or do without.  It's the MS way.

the leverage is that MS will no longer support Win98 or SE.
add NT4.0 to the list as of July 2003.

can't buy it or get help for it.

If they are for W98 SE, they should run fine in W98, just keep the OS updated and groomed.
