Video Card Ideas

Hey guys! ,

Here is what I have now.

800mhz PIII
394Kb of RAM (3x128's)
Win XP Pro (full version)
GeForce DDR-DVI
Soundblaster Audigy Gamer

Guys, I am looking at possibly getting a GeForce 3 Ti200.  It is $113 at http://www.newegg.com.  I realize my PC is slow, but I can't crash this thing.  I just think a newer VC would keep me happy for now.  My wife will let build a GAMING ONLY PC, but it will have to wait until next year.   I realize this might fall into the "if it ain't broke don't fix it category", but I would like a little bit better framerates, that's all.

Please guys any help is appreciated in advanced.

Upgrade your video card and you can always use the new card in the machine you're going to build next year.  Just remember to hold on to your current card so you can stick it back in your current PC.

Ya might wanna look into the GeForce4 Ti4200 if it's within your $range. It's been stated that some can even bo overclocked to perform as well as a Ti4600 and atleast better than a Ti4400 but in that respect everyones results will vary.

You can check http://www.pricewatch.com for the best prices.

I saw the 64Mb version as low as $137 and 128Mb for $162

Twenty dollars more and you would get Gf4Ti4200. It should still be quite good card in next year.

If it is the Gainward GF3 Ti 200, jump on it.  You can overclock that card to Ti500 levels, and the improvement from the GF DDR to the GF3 will blow your mind.  I've got that with a system that is otherwise almost identical to yours.  I play AH at 1600x1200, 32bit color, and my frame rate never goes below 50 - usually 65 - 75.

Not to be rude or anything, but if I may ask, why are you letting your wife decide whether or not you can build a new computer now for you ;-)

I love my wife dearly and with the 10 mo. old son, my spending is deliberately cut off.  I try and get stuff for the little guy.  My computer is fine, I just need a better VC.

I also have an 800 hz machine.  I picked up a G3 for about $90 on clearance and I get consistent frame rates in the 40s while running the highest resolution and color depths.

In terms of price v. performance, it's a great deal!  I'd say run, don't walk, and buy that sucker.

(PS! WOOHOO! I'm a senior member at last! It only took two and a half years)

Overclocking does help. I have a GeoForce 3 and I clock up the core from 200 to 230 and the RAM clock  from 460 to 480. The clock increase nets to an average 30 fps change while in the game. My card is a Visiontech but I use the Hercules drivers (my last card was a hercules Geo2) since they also have a nice clock GUI tool. There are some registry fixes also that were required, 2 setting if I remember right. Overclocking is worth it, just dont over over clock it.

;)
