Average stats..
« on: July 23, 2002, 08:04:27 AM »
I had suggested one time that HTC take a look at maybe doing an "average stat" thing.

By that... I mean, in the score page somewhere, maybe when you bring up a player, not only do they show your stats but an "average stat" for each point such as... average K/D average K/hour.. average hit percentage etc...

I think it would be a great help for the new guys and fun for the veterans.   I think HT said he thought it was a good idea at the time.

Great Idea ! It would be very helpful for alot of players to know where they fall.  I figure alot of people actually do better than they think.

The ability to look at percentile break-downs would be cool too.  I.E. 99th percentile, 95th, 90th, 80th 70th... etc.

Yes... I am pretty cowardly poopie..  Still... I thought at one time either pyro or hitech had said that this was a good idea...

Perhaps it is harder to do/more time consuming than it seems?

LOL Poop!

Bugger the stats! Lazs can do what he likes with the scores. The only time I check is to measure my own performance in conjunction with knowing the missions I've been flying/driving. On their own, they're not much use. 50 kills could mean 50 vulches, for example.

I too am a statistician.

I've copied stats from the game and placed them into my own excel spreadsheets for years. I did this in AW and also now with AH. I keep track of my averages also.

The comparisons that I do are ultimately with myself, sometimes some of my squad mates. I use these stats to try and continue my own improvement.

I've also set criteria for myself such as comparing my older scores with like numbers of sorties.

It's hard not to get excited when I have a good ranking, but I do realize that the rankings can be skewed heavily.

Does AH need to provide averages for us to see?
I think that would be a welcomed bonus, but not the end of the world if it doesn't work out.

know where they fall?
They fall in two groups:

1. having fun.

2. not having fun.

but I guess for those who need to look at a spreadsheet to quantify how much fun they are having then scrutinize their enjoyment vs the average players enjoyment then so be it.

If I recall from WB's, someone was doing a scoring page that reflected Lazs suggestion (Memory gone, help me here..) anyway, 1/1 K/D ratio was about "Average" back then....

Ding ding ding!  Fester hit this one right on the head.  I've got a guy in my squad who despises flying anything conventional.  To that end, he's got serious sticktime in C-47s, SBDs, Vals, you name it.  He'd sooner fly an empty C-47 into a group of badguys than a fighter.

Needless to say, his stats aren't the greatest, but he has a lot of fun.  It's pretty tough to measure "success" by any objective criteria with a guy like this.

i'm with beetle, scott and dead man on this, i used to watch my "stats" and i found i was flying safe missions in safe planes to raise my k/d, now i fly what i want where i want and have more fun , i still try to land my kills , thats part of my fun.

stats are for baseball

got to agree, up until tour 15 i think i always worried about getting up the ladder. 50th or so was my best at the end of a tour although at times i was up higher. However that tour was among the least enjoyable I can recall.I was getting mad at myself for crashing etc.Kind of lost my way in why i played this game. Now i Just play and ignore the risk to scores in favour of having fun.Just fly whatever you feel like.Sometimes the craziest things happen when you get desperate! :D

Who said I wasn't having fun?
This game is great entertainment, it is also a game of skill. Aiming to improve my skill does not interfere with my enjoyment. Checking my stats is the measurable method that I choose to use.

And what makes an average player anyway?
