AH most potent bomber killer?
« on: September 25, 2001, 08:08:00 AM »
The F4U-1C is by far the most lethal but I rarely fly it. Hitting power and ammo load it's hard to beat.

My experience with the Yak-9T and the 37mm cannon has been really good. Takes tails and pilots right out like a pointy-toe'd boot used on a cockroach. Above 20k though I like the P-38 or even the P-47. With 100% fuel and drop tanks they can loiter for a LONG time up there, both are good high alt performers and they each have very good hitting power.

I'd be interested in what others like to
fly when they're looking for bombers or also what they wish they were in when they see one flying near by.

190a8 and Ta152 most potent B-killer for me. I use the 190 up to 25k if needed and the Ta152 for higher alts. Couple of 30 mm rounds does the Job just fine. You need to be at least coalt high E or higher to engage the bomber.

the 190 with the 30mm's, the 109g10 with 30mm's, yak9t with 37mm.

P-38 is crap vs buffs above 27k, glass and turbolaser dont mix.

Im waiting for the mossie to hunt buffs  :)

p47 is definitely the best bomber killer in the game if you already have alt. its durable, packs a big punch and has good high speed handling, all essential characteristics for buff hunting.

for intercept when you have little time, however, it ghas to be the 109-g10 with single tater and twin 20mm ... being able to wep to 25k before the enemy bombers have time to cross 2 sectors is just something the jug cant approach.

When a dot first appears on radar, I typically launch a 109 (I like them all).  These birds climb so well that you can intercept and kill a buff before he gets a chance to make his first run.

Westy MOL:

The F4U-1C is by far the most lethal...
--------------------------------------

I flew one of these a few times last night, and I couldn't do any damage in the darn thing.

At one point, I got in a dogfight with a spit, sat on his 6 at just over 200 yds for a couple of seconds, and got a couple a hits (shoulda been more, if not for my terrible gunnery--but in a tiffie, those hits woulda demolished the plane), then disengaged when a couple of friendlies joined in.

I did end up with the kill, but the spit pilot came back and said he died 'cause he was wounded.

So I guess that if I was interested in shooting buffs, I'd pick a tiffie.   :)

The first time I ever killed a Lancaster in AH, I was in a 202.  :)

Westy:

I agree about the P-47 at alt and its hitting power is solid. I don't much care for the P-38 so I don't fly it. I also like the 190A8 with a2a rockets. It's not that great at alt though and gets real sluggish beyond 27k; very tough to deal with the dancing B17s at that alt in an FW. I have had some success with the Niki at around 27k, much higher it too suffers poor handling. Its cannon though are a lot weaker than the FW, and it doesn't take as much damage as the FW or P-47 can when taking fire from a Buff.

P-47 is awesome against buffs, the F4Uc is also excellent, but my choice would be the jug.

Once I tried to intercept a incoming 27k bombers with Typhoon(I was otw to do some jabo when someone noticed ib HQ raid).
Then I realized that when I would be in a co-alt with those bombers they would be already 30 miles ahead of me...  :D
That was year ago, not sure if Typhoon climbs better now.

Me 109G-10 with gondolas if they are high.
Chog if they are not so high.

S!

I'm no expert, but my gradually improving technique tells me one thing is important over all in the selection of Buff killers.

It all depends on whether you are on the ground or up at co-alt with the bomber.

If you already have co-alt with the bomber, then the 190A8 with 30mm's is probably the best, closely followed by the Ta152H, (costly choice if you lose) G10 with the pods, 190A5 and then the Jug.

The G10 has great climb, good speed and weapons, but is fragile and has lousy high speed handling.

If the bomber is 30,000+, then the Ta152 or Jug.

If you are on the ground:

If the bomber is under 10,000 ft, then the Tempest, (if you want to spend the perks) G10, 190A5 or Typhoon are the best.

The Typhoon has the great guns, but its high speed handling is worse than the G10.

If the bomber is at 20,000 plus, the G10, Tempest or the 190D9.

The D9 is often underrated, but it has an excellent climb and speed, and I find the twin 20mm's and 2 13mm's are closely grouped enough to take down any bomber with two passes.  It also has great high speed handling, especially roll, something you need to have for survivability when closing with the bomber.

That is also the reason the A8 is a better bomber killer than the G10 if A8 is already up there at alt.

My favourite approaches are either from directly above, or directly below.  In the case of the attack coming down, starting slightly ahead and above the bomber, is important.  If the attack is going to come up from below, starting above the bomber is also important.  Then you drop down below the bomber, get slightly ahead, and build the big speed (450mph) you need in the zoom up into the bombers belly.

I find killing a bomber equally as tense a situation as taking on a fighter.   :)

P-47, nothing can match the hitting power of 8 .50's. Or the Yak-9T and the 152 come close.
