Plane for sea/land rescues..?
« on: July 25, 2002, 05:43:47 PM »
If rescuing came along the Consolidated pby catalina would be good also could be loaded woth torps....

PBY-5A

Wingspan 104 feet

Length 63 feet 10 inches

height 20 feet 2 inches

Power 2 pratt &whitney r-1830-92 1,200 hp radials

Weight empty 20,910 lb; loaded 35,420

Maximum speed 175mph at 7,000 feet

Service ceiling 13,000

Range 2,350 miles

Now maybe this could be the first sea plane addition to AH and it was used wuite alot by the navy. Developed in the 1930's,most improtant flying boat of ww2

And if you have any info on what plane droped jeeps to the makiee in france id like to know cause thats what ah needs so we can drop gvs...

H8K2 "Emily" would be better in every way, and usefull in far more roles, even giving the Japanese planeset a bomber with something approaching a payload.

Don't mean to spoil your fun, but where are the guns? No guns = No fun (think Goon in furball here).

Try the OS2U Kingfisher if you want a navy scout/rescue boat.

The Sunderland's defenses and performance pale in comparison with the H8K2 "Emily", the best flying boat of the war.

Kawanishi H8K2 "Emily"
Engines: four Mitsubishi MK4Q Kasei 22 at 1,850hp.
Speed: 290mph
Ceiling: 29,000ft
Climb: 10 minutes, 12 seconds to 16,400ft. Average climb of 1,600ft per minute.
Range: 4,450 miles.
Armament: five 20mm Type 99 Model 1 cannon, one each in bow, dorsal, tail turrets and two beam hatches, and four 7.7mm Type 92 machine-guns, one each in ventral, port and starboard fuselage sides and cockpit hatches.
Ordanance: sixteen 50kg bombs or eight 250kg bombs or two 800kg bombs or two 1500kg bombs or two 800kg torpedoes.
Number Built: 167 of all versions. The H8K2 was the major version with 112 built.

This is quite probably the most capable bomber the Japanese used in WWII. The H8K2 can carry eight 550lb bombs, or two 3,300lb bombs, that is enough to inflict some serious damage and is three times as much as any other Japanese bomber that I have seen. The H8K2 also has the destinction of being extremely durable, quite possibly the most durable aircraft feilded by any nation in WWII. Because the H8K2 is a flying boat it would have to be enabled only at ports and coastal bases (where it would spawn in the water like a PT Boat).
