Hey I was drinking heavily tonight and I realised, THERE WAS A HELICOPTER USED DURING WW 2!!!!! I forget the name, because I havent looked it up in my books, but I know it was s sikorsky.
Now I 've heard alot of folks saying how they would like to be able to pick up their allied pilots, this is the way, if im correct than the first recorded military use of a helicopter in war was in ww2 when a pilot went down in burma and was recoverd, understand that this helicopter had a rotery engine and the beginings of a winch to raise a man into the side door, but dont you think this is an answer to the pick me up blues??!! Im sure it would be slow but what an addition it would make,,, give your thoughts pilots......

As far as I remember, there was a heli used during WWII, but it was used by the German navy for scouting. It was a primitive thing with a cable attached to the ship in case of emergencies and so it didn't get lost.

That was an autogyro, not a helicoptor; and it was used on U-boats.

Actually both the Germans and Americans used real helicopters during WW2.

I know the USA used them a little bit in Asia to rescue people.

The Germans used them a bit more in the East for resuply and pliot rescue. In fact a German helicopter was planned to be used in the Musolini rescue but it either broke down or crashed shorty before the operation so gliders and Storches were used.

That would be the sikorsky R-2,R-3,and R-4

and if it is put in AH don't think its an airplane don't hit full throtlle to go fast push the stick forward to do that

I know I had a demo to hind that helicopter game long switch from HTOL to VTOL

I know that the center stick changes wich direction the main rotor is pointed, forward for forward back for back e.tc.
the stickon the left side of seat is called a collective, it changes the angle of the main rotor blades and has a twist style throttle( similire to a motor bike) and the petals change the angle of the tail rotor giving yaw force, most pilots dont have the abilbility to control a helicopter with their current sticks but AH could make an auto throttle im sure. I think its a great idead, even though im sober now, still sounds like a wiener to me...........

Don't forget that the Germans were also going to use a helicopter to rescue Mussolini from his mountain top hideout, but the craft had mechanical problems so they instead used a Fischler Storch to go in, and used German Paratroopers to clear a 100yd "runway" on the side of a mountain.  Quite an accomplisment in itself.  

What a waste of a person to do it for though!

I don't know if it was a waste to rescue Mussolini... his lasagna was legendary... and he was a wizard with calamari:)

Germany was the world leader in helicopter development in WW2; they used single and twin-rotor types operationally. They never made many of them, despite placing large orders. By the time they were ready for service, there were other priorities.

I'm not sure when it was produced (probly post WW2) but at the Tilamook air museum they have the weirdest helo I've ever seen.
it has 2 rotors (turning oposite directions) that mesh together in the front and no tail rotor.  it was built for the USMC if I remember corectly.   I'm still looking for a picture, I know I've got one somewhere
