It's due to the seating arangments of one of the Early French Republics IIRC.  The seating of the legislature was arranged in a semi-circle, and the different political parties, while trying to get into caucusing groups wound up sitting so that the left side was full of liberals, and the right side, the conservatives.

I know that ;)

What i mean is "conservative" can mean "right" - like commies here in Russia, while "liberals" are "right" (pro-western parties).

Also, can you judge who was conservative or liberal between left communists (Trotsky, Mao, Khoji) or right communists (Tito), or "centrists" like Stalin? ;)
