Greetings pilots,

  Since the recent update the good ol Buffs have just simply gone by the wayside. Which is really sad.But i have a theory that I'd like yall to help me out with. Now Before yall assume that this is another bomber whine thread please hear me out. I'll start with a little history. Most Bomber runs(b17/24/Lanc) during daylight where at altitudes of 18k up to 30k. Raids consisted of no less than 20 A/C. On these raid the flight would have a lead. This lead Bomber would calibrate his sight and when he dropped his bombs EVERYONE would drop. It was usually signaled by a smoke canister/bomb. The notion of bombing at altitudes of 15k and lower are just crazy. All of the exisiting Fighter A/C in AH perform there best at these Alts. So its safe to say if you fly to your target at those alts you WILL get shot down. It takes no time at all for said fighters to climb to 12k or 15k. Why would anybody take the time to get their bomber to alt just to be hosed near target. Now above 20k and thats a little different.  So all you intrepid pilots out there. Get together with your squadies find out who knows how to calibrate the bombsite fairly well and try it out...even with a minimum of 3 pilots thats 9 BUFFs. Please try it and get back to me with the results. I hate to see the Buffs go unused in AH. The reason I joined up to AH was the possiblity of seeing a huge bomber formation escorted by fighters just like you see in the movies. I've seen it like twice and it was simply AWESOME to see.
Please, try it out, see what you think. If there are problems please, by all means, tell me so we can get the BUffs back into the game.

The notion that all bombing raids were conducted over 15k is a myth.
WWII was more than the ETO.  Altitudes were determined by AAA and enemy fighter threats.  In the PTO you'll find bombers pretty damn low.  In the Aleutians you'll see B-24s coming over Japanese airfields low enough that their gunners strafe their targets.
The lower the planes flew, the more accurate their bombs were.

I like the new change to the Buffs.  The bombing accuracy or I should say Inaccuracies of AH bombing is on par with WW2.  It requires precision and some luck to hit the target.  The days when you could land all your eggs where the target crosshairs was located is over and should be over.

I think a big reason why there are fewer bomber drivers now is that with strat being bugged, there are no factories and cities to carpet bomb.  Towns are still fun to carpet bomb, but too many times you climb to alt and line up a sector ahead only to find that the town was flattened 5 min before by friendly jabos.

Once strat targets are fixed I think you will see more bombers.  (And I mean 100% fixed.  Not the current scenario where it works on some maps and not others.  Or you can destroy the HQ/factor/city and it has no impact.  Nothing like getting 5 players in a big formation up to find that a factory is not destuctible).

I have to bomb below 14K. I have not figured out how to compensate for the the wind. Otherwise, my accuracy is pretty good.

Any ideas about dealing with the wind over 14k?

You just need to learn to use good salvo and delay settings. Bombing in WW2 was not pinpoint precision and should not be in AH. Even from 20k it's easy to get a good spread across the target and hit 1 or more hangars and fuel/acks and other sundry ground objects.

It all boils down to some players not willing to learn. My own squad set about practising with the new system and got it worked out it did'nt take that long it's hardly rocket science but is more realistic.

There are some other facets of bombers in the MA that is bothering me right now but I can't quite put my finger on it yet.

i actualy use this theory in dawn of aces (ien's ww1 flight sim) as i form up as the lead bomber with 10-15 sqadie f2bs each with 2-8 bombs. when over the target i calibrate and watch for drop time the target as it passes out of view under my wings. depending on the altitude can be anywhere for 0 sec at 3k to 20+ at 10k. then i call drop. this is the main problem.

about 5 min before hand i call for a .pingtest on everyone. when i get the numbers back i average them up and add 1 second. then if most of my squad had a ping of 500ms i would call it 2 seconds before drop b/c you ALWAYS round up. this way some good ping bombers drop early, some bad ping bombers drop late and most of the bombs hit target...

this can work semi well in AH but since AH actualy has a bombsite it would probably be better if everyone just learned to use it.

  As far as "yall" is concerned. Its apart of the language down here (kentucky). So yall are just gonna hve to get used to it mmkay:p

Medium bombers such as the A-20,B-25,B-26 and yes sometimes even the B-24 in the PTO did bomb at low levels. They also had High drag bombs or delayed bombs that wouldnt explode on impact. Also we're talking about having to deal with Uber planes that were availible during the later part of the war. Plus if you'll check your history any heavy bombers that made "low" altitude strike were eatin alive by flak and Air threat (Polestie as an example)

  So still bombing under 15k is almost pointless. Only IF you can hit a base that doesnt have any activity. Or IF all the FH are down and at that point whats the use when its about to be captured anyways. In my experiences, I've almost ALWAYS been intercepted right b4 I drop bombs.

I beleive, that one might be safer at Higher altitudes and when bombing as a group it might be easier if the lead bomber calibrates his sight so when the lead drops EVeryone drops. Thats the way it was done in reality and i thought it could be used in AH.

Im well aware of some of the many problems that the BUffs have right now but we gotta work with what we have at the time until changes are made. Adapt and overcome:)

bombsights are for sissies and heavy bombers are useless: The true way is that of the fighter bomber armed with bombs and rockets-P47D30 is awesome and after u have expended your bombs and missiles u can stay above the enemy field and vulch as much as you please! Fun fun fun

who wants to fly all the way to an NME HQ drop TWO eggs and half a dozen rocks just to knock out AAA? I myself would rather hop in a buff,Lanc or course, make a bomb run over HQ and pound it into the dust....
