Advice for surviving in a goon

For various reasons, I often fly a goon. Thus I am a natural target, so I would appreciate advice on survival.

Stay low.

If you can stay about 10-20feet off the ground, other people won't see an icon on you untill they get ridiciously close.  It helps you avoid being spotted.

staying low is about the only option you have.  Sometimes approaching the field you're trying to capture from the opposite direction of the attack works since the enemy is looking that way.

Hi qts,
I don't fly as many goons as I used to (Got fed up with flying for 15 mins only to find the ack was up and everyone had pissed off and gone somewhere else). :( However a few things I found.... If you have been flying straight and level long enough for your speed to stableise (sp)? goons will pull quite a nice loop (Or Immelman for that matter). It's a one shot manouver as you will never have the speed for a 2nd attempt (Unless you are at about 10K). If you do this and then head for the deck the reduced icon range low down can sometimes mean you can run away while the con is turning for another go. This manouver has to be timed perfectly as the last thing you want to do is present a nice plan view to your attacker. I usually don't pull this until the guy is with D400 or so (Unless the opens up earlier). If this fails and they reverses for another stab I keep turning towards him and breaking off as he comes in (While screaming in range channel for help). :) Any manouvers you make while flying in the general direction of your opponent happen much quicker to him. You are only postponing the inevitable but at least a low slow con is a more attractive target to your fellow countrymen and if they are serious about the field capture they will come, just be sure to make sure you leave them in no doubt as to your height & position relative to the field. Alternatively get a wingman. I usually try to get to the field with the main force and loiter until called. That way help is always at hand. If you try to sneak to the field after the battle has started you are always going to run into goon hunmters out for an easy kill.

Thats it from me, not an expert by any means but I do have my moments. ;)

The C47 has quite a good alt ceiling. Is it worth going with a medium-alt bomber sortie and then diving?

High up a goon is a giant "shoot me sign"
It's kind of like flying an f4u4 except even the slow planes will latch onto you.

The safest thing is to be on the deck, with an la7 nearby to save your ass.  The goon can turn quite well, so it can usually survive at least one pass from an attacker, but if you get to that point and don't have help, you're screwed.

I've used the high approach several times with fighter escort (Never tried it with bombers as support). It's a good tactic but a bit like the "loop" manouver it's a one shot ride. If you do get jumped all you can do is hope your escort can take the con(s) out pretty damm quick. If one does get through, break one way or the other and dive for speed during seperation. I found a "Corkscrew manouver works best (Aim to end up still heading for the field you were going to). Hopefully your escort will keep the con too busy to search the skies for your icon and if he does keep track of you hopefully your escort will have both alt and "E" on him after he has turned to chase you and be able to convince them your not such an easy touch. Either way friendly support is the only way to give you a fighting chance if the sky is full of red icons. There ain't much out there you can out dive/manouver and as for firepower at you disposal (Now let me think).   Of course if you do have to blow all that alt evading a con and find yourself low your no worse off than if you had decided to go in at 20ft anyway and the chances are you will have loads of speed for a few minutes at least. As said in other posts an approach away from the main onslaught can give you vital seconds. But basically you can't beat fighter support who are aware of your situation. Keep the main attack force informed of your position at all times, If nothing else it jogs thier memory occasionally when they forget that the purpose of the mission was to take the field and not for them to rack up perk points vulching the field. :)

the "high" approach worked for me a few times. there seem to be quite a few roadrunners out there that take a dora/La7 and go full speed ahead on the floor searching for the goon. if they see a low dot, they know it's it. no defenders will stop them in time since they are too fast, and you can't just dive at them because they are on the deck.
to counter that you can "play a fighter" and come higher , but this requires escort.

if you are spoted at low alt, try flying really close next to a cliff or a steep hillside. that means that the bandit must come at your 6 or 12 only, or he hits the wall. when he does, try to build a little distance from the wall and turn hard into it. they are much faster and can't follow or they crash into the wall. you'd be suprised how often they do.

that's my trick - expect it to work once in a blue moon.

If all else fails try to force a ho as you may win (cause them to ram you), and its cool to say you took down someone down in a goon :)

The most important thing in driving goons is not getting spotted in the first place. For this, you should bear in mind that:

1) you should always keep low
2) you should check enemy radar coverage
3) you should check the altitude of the enemy base
4) you should check out the terrain
5) you should keep keen eye on the status of enemy/frdly air superiority
6) you should keep keen eye on the radio text
7) you should scream for information every opportunity you get
8) you should always try to come in at a direction that is least expected
9) once you jump within 5 mile radius of the base, you are commited. It's either drop or die before dropping.
10) once spotted, you're days are numbered

I goon either at alt or on the deck . it depends on the situation and how HOT the base is ... the advantage to droping down from 8-10k over the target  is .. the nme planes cant catch you as easy and there not expecting it .cut the throttle and pull up at 500 ft  abouve the town and kick them out .
I've also landed behind a hill and waited it out till the time was right . (Hide the goon )
the fastest way to get a capture is to land ... power slide up to the map room and give them the boot .
Its all in the timing .

And hanging out with any friendlys is always helpfull .

If you're going to capture an airfield, make your friendlies not kill the cons (unless they can keep the field vulch-closed), but let them offer their 6s and drag them away. Perkplanes work best for this. Much better survivability for the goon than constantly upping cons at the field just 2 miles away.

I agree with the "bring along lots of friends, especially ones in perk planes" philosophy.  However, when this isn't the case and one of those nasty enemies has spotted you, your options are pretty limited.

My "trick" is to use the c-47 against them.  The goonie bird will stay airborn at speeds around 80-90 mph.  You can use this to your advantage.  Give your enemy as little of a target as possible by turning hard as he closes.  Stay as close to the deck as possible.  Keep this up...basically performing a scissors with him.  Chances are your opponent will be so occupied with trying to knock you down, he'll stall himself out and auger.

Just don't expect it to work too many times before someone else comes in and rips you to shreds :)

I shouldnt even be posting this as it may be the worst example of gaming the game, but oh well.

Some of the hugest rants and dweeb accusations can be achieved by playing this little trick. :D

Find out where your countrymate is leaving from with his/her goon.  Then up a B17 (single not formation.) Fly directly..i mean like one hundred feet ....just above the goon and maintain a perfect formation.  If you both stay really tight you look like one blob from far away.  You also have the same short distance icon going for you if you stay good and low.

So now the bogies will look at your dot on the deck and think "free goon kill!"  They will come screaming in at Mach 5 to shoot down the "goon."  Then the icons pop up and the fighter pilot loses all bowel control.  He/she will be so enraged at your shamless dweebosity that they will just have to attack you and shoot that goon down!

If you have good coms with your goon and you work as a team, the goon pilot basically has the guns of a B17.

But wait!  The bogie must have notified all of his countrymen that he was just shot down by the biggest tard in the game, nay the world.

But dont worry, he/she has already muted themselves by cussing at you on channel one!  That is if their computer monitor or other hardware hasnt been embedded in the grass outside after being hurled through the window!

I have only done this a few times, and would NOT RECOMMEND it  as an actual tactic.  But if you are having a bad day or just havent sprayed a beverage out of your nose from a sudden burst of laughter as someone totally loses it on channel one in awhile, give it a try.
