UK Convention Date/Venue set!
« on: August 16, 2002, 12:30:31 PM »
I originally posted this in the Convention forum, but as not everyone reads there, especially now the main Con is over, thought it would get a larger audience here....  :D

From Trip, who is organising this year's UK Convention:

This year's convention will be held at the Great Barr Hotel in Birmingham, on the weekend of  26th/27th of October. The price will be GBP 145 per person regardless of whether they are a player or non-player. This covers the convention, accommodation, food (including the Gala dinner Saturday night), everything.

I need a list of confirmed attendees before I sign the contract.  After that I'll need volunteers to organise the various events. Any suggestions for a speaker appreciated.

Please email me ( steve@clara.net ) ASAP with attendees!

Trip

This price (about $220) also includes Friday night meal and accommodation, which may not be clear from the dates above.  :)

Just to add a few more details...

This event used to be called the UK Air Warrior convention and has been running annually since 1997. It's now Aces High of course and is hosted by the Kraits.

It's a weekend (Friday night to Sunday afternoon) ina hotel in Birmingham, and includes a network of 16 or so PCs (you can bring your own) connected to the internet via dsl.

There are a number of competitions, not all of them flying, other activities and a 'Gala dinner' on Saturday night with one or more guest speakers - in the past these have usually been WW2 pilots. This year we are hoping to get quite a special speaker. There also a lot of unscheduled 'social' events quite often involving the hotel bar.

These events are really great fun. I attended the first one in 1997 without much enthusiasm and havent missed one since. This year it's my turn in the hot seat.

If you are interested in attending, or want more details please post here or email me - steve@clara.net

Kraits Tenth Birthday!
« Reply #5 on: August 29, 2002, 09:51:36 AM »
The Krait Squadron, the hosts of the UK Convention, were formed 10 years ago this year..... so not only will this be an Aces High Convention, but also the Krait Squadron's Tenth Birthday!  :D

As cross-stitch is another hobby of mine, I have been designing a sampler which I am hoping to complete and take along to the Con with me - if I get it done in time! Hopefully, this is something like what it will look like....

Well, I could be tempted. It would be great to meet ALL the people who have posted in this thread, plus guys like trikky, shift, and above all - Hammy!

I have mixed feelings about cons. I went to four WB cons - two in the US, and twice to the Eurocon in Holland. On the one hand, it's great to see everyone, but as for playing the flight sim, I have often wondered why people go to so much trouble to ship their computer equipment hundreds of miles to do something which they can do from the comfort of their own living room. But don't get me wrong - I love these events, but it's the people that count :) I'll come if I'm invited. ;)

Now you might think that because I can be such a pain in the neck on boards like this (I was the same in WB) that I might not be that popular. Well, I guess I often speak for the silent majority because I get invited to gamers' homes in different parts of the world, and that is wonderful.

Here's a pic at this years WB Eurocon in Holland. I posted this before, and no-one guessed which one was me. Well, I'm the crusty old greybeard in the lilac shirt and black hat, telling a joke. I think I was the second oldest guy there!

Shift I am certain will be there, not sure of Trikky and Hammy - I hope so!  Anybody who can make it would be very welcome!  :)

Well, a big part of our UK Convention is the competitions - at least a Head to Head and hopefully a few others too - so it helps to have some computers there to play them on..... plus I think it's nice to be able to have a play occasionally "from the Con"  :D

Oh without doubt, the best part of any Con I have been too (every year since 1998) has been meeting other players, and finding out how totally different they look to how I had imagined!  And, of course you are invited!!!  ;)

LOL - one thing I have learned over the years is that people are never as bad in real life as they 'appear' to be in the virtual world.  I am sure you will be no exception!  :)

I think I can safely say you won't be the second oldest guy at our con!  I do hope you can come and look forward to meeting you there!  :)
