I have a wooden spoon. I've used it twice. Once for the first kid, once for the second. I haven't had to use it since, and I have people call me all the time (well, 3 times this summer) and say "I just can't believe how polite your kids are!"
Now, the spoon was used in severe cases to discipline bad behavior, but more importantly, ethics was taught with positive reinforcement. The kids *know* where the spoon is, and what it is for, consider it a political weapon of war as Nuclear weapons are
. They're also consistently *rewarded* for good behavior with love and positive reinforcement, the latter not only from us, but others that meet our kids.
