To prevent the mind shattering affect of the instantaneous shift from AH to your desktop, do the following:

Take a screenshot of the cockpit and set it up as your desktop background.

It still sucks, but its less of a shock.

Instead of a screen shot maybe you should have the film viewer running in the background so you will be viewing some of your greatest kills when dumped.
