It seems like it sometimes when a lot of players are on, or in a small area with high numbers.

In my immediate area I can only connect via dial up modem for the time being.

Depends.

A high ping will help you out when you're on the offensive, hurt you when you're being defensive. You see people where they were a short time ago, making it MUCH harder for them to avoid your gunfire.

A low ping is helpfull on the defensive, it will make sure that when you move, the person behind you sees it ASAP, creating as little lag there as possible. A high ping behind you though can negate it pretty well.

This comparison is based on ping only, assuming everything else is working well. If you have a bad ISP(SHAME ON YOU! get a real isp!) without a stable ping, things will be different.

dial up works fine for me .. only thing i can get also.. my average ping is 250-350 im on a 56k at 53.2bps

Well I have had 2 ISP's for about 2 months now.Both on different backbones.They both run about 110-150 ping rate.

Constantly run trace routes and hardly ever show any packet loss.I check the net status in game a lot also.

Some nights the game plays great and others it is horrible.I can find no difference in the trace routes or net status in game when the game plays crappy.Usually high numbers in the arena or in my area when this happens.Leads me to suspect modem is the problem or the game itself,or a combination.

Don't seem to have much problem with other games.

It is entirely possible that just at these peak hours, your modem is overloaded. PLUS, everyone get fairly bad lag then, its not just you. I dont even start playing untill 10pm eastern, any earlier is unplayable.

Make a back-up copy of system.ini before you edit the original, add these entries at the bottom of the [386Enh] section.

It creates a 4mb buffer for your connection using system memory, I used it when I had dial-up and it seemed to help.

The only disadvantage that I see <56K limited to 33.6 dial-up> is that the damage that I inflict on an enemy takes a bit longer to show up on my FE...I've learned to wait a bit after the hit sprites to see if anything vital falls off him.

What, IMO, is most important is to have a connect that has as little varience as possible....Latency IS important but the consistancy of the connect is what is most important IMO.

Frodo - I would say YES - although as flight sims go, AH is much more tolerant of a weak connection than some. I can remember in WB emptying 70% of my P47 ammo into a zeke, and only got it smoking. Other times, 3% F6F ammo was enough to kill a 109.

The things that make a difference are your ISP (they vary a LOT!), your processor (my last upgrade made a heck of a difference), and if you can get broadband or at least ISDN, that's good too. Don't let people tell you you're a crap shot. That's bull.

Yea going to try another ISP I guess.The last few days I have seen my bullets fly right through cons and when I do see hit sprites I get little damage to the con.
I had a gunnery percentage in fighters of 13%,now it is down to 9.

Also got booted in the TOD last night and again in the main.

Wierd thing is that trace routes ect.consistently show no packet loss.
