Yup that’s pretty much my story!

I saw an add that said: "Stop playing with yourself"
I remember this what is it????
Back in 2022 after a loooooong break from 2010. Old name Ratpack, same for the BBS.

Squad I did the most tours with were the Excaliburs then The 172nd Rabid Dogs. Still trying to talk Illigaf, Coola, Oldman22, and Joecrow into coming back instead of being boring old farts!

I think I saw it in a magazine, maybe a gaming magazine? People used read stuff back in the day, not watch 30 second videos. No wonder the youngsters have a shorter attention span then a goldfish. I wonder how many people under 40 have read a book of a few hundred pages and finished it...

Ah so true. My son is 13 and longest read for him was "Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy", over 800 pages. Trilogy of "Lord of The Rings" and many others. He loves books and that came by example of his parents. No smartphone, he don't even want one.

People have even been taking pics of him and posting them in social media, wondering how that age of young boy sits in a park and reads book instead of fiddling some zombie application.

Here is another blast from the past:

Still have this book sitting on my shelf.  This was just before AH.  Even have a Warbirds sweat shirt awarded to me when I had won a dogfight with HiTech.  He used to hold contests online and award winners with real merch.  Also have several "campaign" pins.  I remember flying halfway across the country to attend a Warbirds convention...different world.

546 pages. That is a book.  What was the book about? Gameplay? dev stuff?

All the above, plus a synopsis of the largest squadrons at the time, WWII pilot stories, a break down of each aircraft, tactics/tips, history of the game from AirWarrior to Warbirds in 1999 (including the resignation of HiTech and staff from IMagic to form HiTech Creations), the Warbirds community in various countries, Warbirds events, etc.

Great bit of history filling in the AirWarrior to Aces High progress and how much Dale has contributed to the genre.

Plaed AW when we had to pay per hour. Then it was Free to playon AOL. Still got 100s of films of flying somewhere on a USB. Played as Yipi then on the B side. Their was a glith where I flew without a cockpit for a few years but I could see better so flew like that lol. In AW 3 the graphics got pretty good and I thought there noway it can look better than that then

I've been flyin AW since the days of GEnie and dos and I'm can't believe how far behind they've fallen. I've been spoiled by the all you can eat pricing and haven't move to WB because I still have memories of $250+ bills on GEnie.  Alot of people are sick of AW but not willing to pay by the hour so I think that there may be a mass exodus from there as long as the cost is flat-rate or reasonable. Can't wait to see it!!  (Image removed from quote.)

This is funny. I found a post I posted in July of 1999, but it says my "join date" is March of 2008.

I’m now glad my 286 wouldn’t pull AW during dos, 12fps.  I played very little. I flew as Arrow in Dos/pre-AOL. I heard of some were at i er $500. 500 in the late 80s was a mortgage payment. Today thst would be about $1500.

And we were going to play no matter what. Divorce may have followed.

Amazes all of us that people complain about $15 flat rate, which is 50 cents per day. Reminds me of old timer stories of “I had to crawl through a desert of crushed glass and razor blades just to walk 5 miles to school.”

I feel I have to start my posts with a disclaimer now so it doesn't start a new dumpster fire.
"These are my opinions and my situation only" I'm stating this from my point of view. Most likely I am the only one in this situation and I am not saying that anybody else is in the same situation or that anybody else has the agrees with my opinions or point of view."

I think the difference for me is that back then I was single and if I ran out of money it only affected me.

These days I have 3 kids and a wife. If each of them wanted an account to play together as a family that would be around 900 a year. I guess I could take it from their budget for new clothes but they might start looking funny when they were all wearing clothes 3 sizes too small. lol

There are too many other options these days that have some level of FTP. They can play WoW up to lvel 20 or WW2 online with limited selections, or Warthunder or whatever. We don't play together enough to justify spending that money when there's other things it could be spent on like new shoes. I also find myself playing less and less so after a while it doesn't work out to 50 cents a day.

I really wish there was a FTP option and some sort of way to attract and keep new players. I know it's not going to happen and there are lists of reasons why it won't work. That said if nothing changes, we all know where it's going to go. It was a fun ride while it lasted!
