New Boy On The Block...<g>
« on: August 29, 2002, 12:47:29 AM »
Just getting started with Aces High, and have been browsing through the threads here. Have lots of questions to cover but for now will settle for just one. :)

In the Thread on Tempest v's La7 the term 'perk' is often referred to. Would someone care to explain what's meant by that? Does that mean some planes performance are more pumped up than they should be? Thanks.

Perk planes are the late war planes, that possess superior performance or were particularly rare.  You earn perk points by getting kills, and can use them to fly the perk planes.  The basic idea of the system is to punish you for using these late war planes.

As Innominate said, you earn perkpoints when you get kills, when you have enough perk points you might buy a perk plane.

Perk planes cost from 8? perk points to 200 perk points.

If you "buy" a perk plane that plane is yours until you get shot down, crash or ditch.
Then you loose the points and the plane, and have to start saving all over again.
Naturally if you land the perkplane, you can choose to fly another plane without loosing you points.

If you fly an early war type of plane and shots down a late war plane (this is hard to do) you earn a lot of points, if you fly a late war plane and kill a early type plane you get very few points(like 0.45 points or so).

If you return safely to base after getting a kill you get all you earned perk points, but if you get killed or bail or ditch you get only like 25% or 50% or 75% of your points scored at that flight.

Hope this helped and please correct me anyone if I am wrong in anything :)

My personal favourite perk plane is TA-152, I simply loooove that plane (and it is cheap, only 20 points) You need to learn how to fly it thoug. (30-40K flights).

Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
The smell, you know that gasoline smell, smelled like victory.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it.

Let me see if I have this right. When I start out I would be in an early model aircraft eg A6M2, Me109 E, P-40C etc. And as I gain kills in those planes I accumulate points which I can then use  towards upgrading to later model planes such as the P-47D, Spitfie Mk. IX, Fw 190d, Yak-3 etc. Correct?

Hmm, interesting system. Methinks though it will be awfully tough knocking down late model planes in early model aircraft. STill, I suppose it can be done lol. :)

No.  Most of the planes are available all the time. Perks buys you the "uber" rides. TA-152, Spit 14, ME 262 etc. You'll see what they'll cost when you log in and go to the hanger.

Everything else is free, please dont taunt me by describing the way it should work.

Contrary to what many people believe, perk planes are only perked because of their popularity (or HTC projected popularity).  In other words, if it dominates (or would dominate) the arena like the F4U-1C did (about 20% of all fighter kills for a couple of months running!), it will be perked.  HTC make the call, not the players.

Performance, guns, time of service introduction etc alone will not guarantee perking.  Only if a plane is unbalancing the arena (to HTC decreed limits) will it be perked.

IMO Innominate has missed the point somewhat: If you fly unpopular planes, you will be REWARDED by receiving more perk points for your kills.  If you fly more popular planes, you will not receive as many perk points.  YOU ARE NOT PUNISHED FOR FLYING LATE WAR PLANES.  You are merely rewarded less if you fly the popular rides.

My tip for earning perk points: You will get more points for landing multiple kills in a popular ride than landing none in an unpopular one.  So, fly a plane you can get kills in.

Enjoy!

There are only a few plance perked as shown above, you can pretty much fly/drive everything else.

Perk planes are perked just so everybody cant just use them all the time.

When your in a perked plane and stand to losse your perk points if you crash or get shot down you will be less likely to....

take risks

run headlong into a battle wihtout concern for the aircrafts safety

keep upping the same perked plane.

The idea is basicly to limit for whatever reason certain types of aircraft.

The Me 262 for example is perked becasue its a jet aircraft so itll outrun everything else on in the game and the cannons are leathle and just 1 or 2 direct hits will rip an aircarft in two.

You can imagine just how bad the game would get if everyone could up a 262 all the time no matter how many time they get shot down.

other planes are perked are not nessesaarily jets , they just perform well or get used to often.

its there to offer the ability to fly somthing SPECIAL but to also keep the game play in balance.

As said you get points for killing things lol

the more you kill the more perk points you get, you can see your perk point when your in the hanger screen.

a word of warning though.

if you do get enough perk points and want to take out the 262 or somthing else you have had your eye on, make sure you practice offline with it or use it in the practice arena first, you dont need perk point in there or off line, you can fly them NOW.

When you do take out a perk plane remeber that you will always default to the last aircraft you flew, make sure when online that you are not going to spawn in a perked plane if you dont intend too, specialy if the filed is being heavely attacked.

I acidently logged on and spawned into a spitIX plance cos it was the last thing i flew last time i logged on.
I spawned into a airfiled that was being attacked to help to defend it, and got straffed and killed on the runway.

Not normaly a problem but as it was the perked Spit i lost 60 perkies :(

just make sure what your spawning is my advice lol

 :D

Actually, you've mentioned a couple of times now that you feel that a person gets "punished" or "penalized" for flying perk planes.  What do you mean by that?  I'm not trolling here, just curious...

yep pips.. the best pilots will be killing you in the best planes.

It's not really that bad tho... perk planes are not used much since it hurts the "better" pilots egos to be shot down while in one..  There is a stigma attached to flying perk planes also.... rightly so.

The Arado is a perked ride, isn't it?

I think one could consider it being "punished" or "penalized" driving a perk plane because there is a giant label over your head saying "I'm in an uber plane, please come get me." Well, it's there on everything except the C-Hog.  Although I don't believe that statement, it could be one explanation.

By the way, welcome to AH :)
