Talk about luck---->name this
« on: August 29, 2002, 08:11:24 AM »
Stopped by to say hello and share my very fortunate luck with you virtual pilots.
Near my home for the last couple of years I have had the privilage to glance skyward on hearing the sound of a warbird, I look up and there it is turning gracefully. It has an unmistakable wing design, it is a spitfire.
Seeing this beauty in real life and getting a free "show" is amazing.
The gentleman who owns the spitfire is the president of Corel Corporation, and flies it quite regularly.
I am attaching certain pics I took when I had the opportunity to meet the gentleman and his plane just before he took off for a recreational flight.
I would like you guys to name the spitfire i.e mark
:D
I am also attaching a picture that really tweaked my interest. It is a canopy shot of a external rear view mirror and would like to know is it original ? I know the answer cause I asked the owner:)
Anyway enjoy

Yeah, the Spit did have a rear view mirror.  In Air Warrior the rear view mirror was modeled...when you looked backwards, the mirror popped into view to show what was at your six.

Maybe a Mark XVI?

As I recall this was a late war Mark IX with Packard Merlins and cut down rear fuselage.

Dunno really if the Mark VIII has ever been built with cut down rear fuselage. Mark VIII is outward very similar to the IX, only the tailwheel is not retractable on the IX.

I have the impression that it is Merlin engined (shorter nose, no bulges), not Griffon, this also point to a XVI

This is all dragged form memory, I'll have to look it up. Could be dead wrong ;-)

I was right, it's a mark XVI

It's in the list with survivors:

I saw this Spit XVI at Kessimi at the 51 Stalion about 1 year ago. It was just purchased by a Canadian. Brad Lauderback was nice enought to let me sit in the cockpit. Tell me about deflection shooting ... all you see is a tiny gunsight and the nose extend for ever, I'm not even sure you could see the target if you pull a shallow 2G tracking shot.

I recall this Spit from Ebay or a similar auction when it was for sale. The 5 Start Spitfire they used to call it. The one who never saw combat.

OP is the owner still the Canadian guy? Where is she now?

No nothing to do with this, it's more like this :

The center of the gunsight is very close from the cowling, no view for deflection shooting at all.

This spitfire was purchased for 2 million dollars, not sure if it was canadian funds or not:D
She currently resides in ottawa canada where she calls home. She shares a hanger with the owners 4 or 5 other aircraft. The owner showed me an interesting thing or two about this aircraft I will post some other shots.
He adamently maintains this aircraft saw action during the war but I have no way to prove or disprove this.
You are absolutely correct about the gunsight and your view over the nose.
Interesting thing about the intakes, you can see from my screenshot I have placed an arrow showing a flute on its tailing end.
These were controlled manually by the pilot.
At idle on the tarmack they had to remain wide open or the plane would seriously overheat.
Conversely depending on the altitude of the plane the pilot had to adjust the airflow by opening and closing the flute.
Be nice if this was modelled in AH:D
