is there such a thing as a pal dvd ?

had a fellow at work claim there were pal dvds( as opposed to ntsc)  .  i googled and it seems that their may be. can anyone clarify if so? i thought all dvds followed the same standard.

and i dont mean region cd's  i know what that means.

Yes. And those PAL DVDs are always shorter than NTSC :p They use different way to transfer movie from the film to digital. In NTSC you have same movie length in minutes and in PAL its a bit less. I guess they just accelerate the soundtrack to match the video. See an example here http://www.dvdscan.com/amelie.htm
