had a fellow at work claim there were pal dvds( as opposed to ntsc) . i googled and it seems that their may be. can anyone clarify if so? i thought all dvds followed the same standard.
and i dont mean region cd's i know what that means.

Yes. And those PAL DVDs are always shorter than NTSC
They use different way to transfer movie from the film to digital. In NTSC you have same movie length in minutes and in PAL its a bit less. I guess they just accelerate the soundtrack to match the video. See an example here
