Flying Styles..
« on: April 24, 2001, 07:58:00 PM »
I was up the other night and ran into a pack of P38's.. and in observing the fight from on high for a few moments was able to decipher who was flying two of 'em... Zigrat and Bug322. The one I had pegged as Zig nailed me on the first turn.. (yup, Zig alright) and I returned to the distant fight with a p51D (having been in that atrocious B thing the previous sortie) To find only one P38 and a 109. I made a fast pass on the p38 and watched the evasive.. "Bug" I sez to myself, and I swap over onto the 109. One turn later I sez "ahhh. Zigrat."

Seems I can do this with other guys too... Udie and Hblair are quick to spot.. tho sometimes I mistake Berserker fer Udie when it gets hot and hairy. Hazed flies a lot like Udie too but he don't do the flick roll the same way. The rythm is diffrent...

Now, it's nothin in particular I can define... but do you guys sometimes get into a fight and on the second or third turn KNOW who it is from the way he flys??

Have we been doin this too long?? LOL!

Absolutely.  Usually I can tell on the very first turn who it is, and if not that, I can at least judge skill level fairly accurately.

While I rarely can tell who a particular plane is based soley on how it is being flown, I certainly can very quickly tell if the person is novice, expert, or oh crap I hope I can extend away.

One thing you learn very quickly (or you die a lot), is to be very warey of lesser planes.  While everyone uses the easy to fly planes, when you see a plane with a more restrictive flight envelope, you'd better watch your arse.  There arn't many novice or marginal pilots flying around in P47s or Yak9s.  Its not that the planes are bad, its just they require a more disciplined pilot who knows how to use them.

Cant' really ID the bad guy, but I quickly know if he knows what he's doing.

As a classic example, if u attack a guy dead 6 and he does a spilt S, then I know it's probably not a Top Ace.

if I see a good pony pilot I will think of the TAS (sry Hangtime, never dogfighted you yet). If I run in a P38 I will think of TAC, a 109 I will think to the famous LWs guys (too many to name, but HB/Santa/Regurge/Grunhtz/blablah).

When I was fighting HB/grunhertz, I could guess who I was chasing to their evasives. I think they could tell the same between Nomde or me.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, I'm pretty easy to ID, I'm the D30, I may have other P47-D25s (soon D11s) around me.   Gotta love the dedicated plane squadrons, wohoo!

Frenchy is very easy to spot.  He thinks that overgrown behemoth of his is some kind of fighter plane.

And I can spot Manedew from 5.0k.  Just look for the helicopter.
