"Parents hope implanted microchip will foil abductions

Last Updated Mon, 02 Sep 2002 21:39:54

READING, ENGLAND - A couple in England say they're going to have a global positioning microchip implanted in their daughter's arm to find her in case she's abducted.

The Duval family said Monday they decided to make the move after the recent murders of 10-year-old girls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

Danielle, their daughter, says she has agreed to the procedure. But the scientist who developed the device says a debate should take place about whether implanting the chip would violate the girl's rights.

The chip is about 2.5 cm long and is implanted under the skin. It can be tracked by computer.

The parents haven't said when the chip will be implanted. "

I don't like the idea of Big Brother, however I'd install Lojack in my 4 year old daughter if it was possible. I'd have it deactivated when she was 18 of course.

Lojack?

Yea, I got a 14 yr. old daughter. I'd like a remotely operated shock device... not on her, on the freaking scumwad boys she will soon be seeing.

Child's rights? Next thing you know our semen will have rights too.

I think Child chip implants are a good idea in this world we've sown thus far...have them with a deactivator code at a set age and or removed.

The down side is, parents would depend more on the chip, and probably pay less attention to exactly what they're doing and where the kids are....

Right on, Ripsnort...
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Any parents here have an "internal timer" that automatically goes off roughly every 1-2 min. when your doing something, and also watching your kids?  By that I mean like your working in the yard, the kids are playing out back...suddenly its quieter than normal, your "two min timer" goes off and you think "hey, its quieter than normal..."  then you go check on the kids...I think its a natural part of parental nature in most parents (I say "most" because a few crack heads are probably wondering what day they changed the diapers on their kids last...)

Our 6 yr.old likes to visit his friend down the street, about 4 houses away.  We let him have his independence and ride his bike over there..but he must call us once he arrives..just a safety thing...I'd still have him do this even if we had a GPS chip on him...though the "chip" sounds pretty bizarre, I'd have to wait and see how this is implanted, tested...maybe in a few years when its just an atomized chip injected via a shot or something, dissolvable at a certain age (shrugs)

great idea that would probably get abused as per rip's description.

I'm sure many people would cry 'big brother'... that is until it's their child that's missing.  At that point I'm sure the parents would be kicking themselves in wishing the child was easy to locate.
It'd make Amber alerts a thing of the past.

Check http://www.lojack.com

It's the intent. Not that the same system could be used for children.

About your 14 year old daughter? Don't worry at all. She probably will only want to date guys who were just like her father when he was 16ish.

It make sense.... if you live in an area with a high rate of child abductions...

then again, I dunno... seems more like these parents don't know how to teach their kid how to take care of themselves.

What was it? I know I saw something when I was a kid... oh yeah that's right... don't talk to strangers, don't get in a car with a stranger, if the stranger is a dude, kick him in the jimmy and run away...

But, I guess a GPS system is much better than a swift kick to the balls.

with the upcoming ski-season I'm beginning to think this would rock for tourist kids...
you have no idea how often we get missing kid reports on the mountain.

maybe just a temporary one.. a 24/hour stick on or something..
or better yet, in the lift ticket.

Are you being sarcastic?  Of course kids have rights.

If some company can track your kid through some chip, who else do you think can?

I think our kids should expect a reasonable amount of privacy when they get older.  Would you bug their rooms as well?

its a tiny step from tracking our 4 year olds, to having chips implanted either right after or right before birth in our infants. With the ability to be tracked from the womb to the grave.

I feel the same way! I guess I can only teach my daughter to use her best judgement.
