LONDON (August 14, 2002 3:01 p.m. EDT) - Now on sale in the duty-free halls of London's Heathrow airport: the world's most expensive bottle of whisky, priced at 22,000 pounds ($34,000 dollars).
It's one of 12 remaining bottles of The Macallan 60-year-old single highland malt whisky, and its price sets a record for Scotch, Glasgow-based distiller Edrington Group said Wednesday.
"Along with an incredible flavor complexity, a bottle of The Macallan 60-year-old is a very good investment," Edrington Group's travel business manager William Owens said.
"A bottle from the same cask sold for 13,200 pounds in 1996 compared with 20,150 pounds in 2002," he said. The bottle sold earlier this year went to an anonymous collector.
Edrington Group, which also makes more humble brands like Old Grouse and Cutty Sark, expects the bottle - currently locked up in an airport safe - to catch the eye of "well-heeled, high-flying travellers."
