Two items for my wish list
« on: September 07, 2002, 10:07:59 AM »
1.  Describe the Spitfires using non-Roman numerals in the hanger....ie  Spitfire 14 instead of Spitfire XIV.  I keep blowing perk points by accident by upping 14s instead of 9s.  Yes, it is my fault, but a momentary lapse of concentration cost me virtually all my perkies last night....and it is not the first time.  I know this has been a problem in the past and the Spitfire 5 was put in between the 9 and 14 to try and distinguish them...but accidents still happen.  I wasn't aware of what had happened until I was informed that I did "not have enough points for that plane".

2.  Input a method by which you can re-up in events if you are booted.  It is such a disappointment when this happens...  I was looking forward to the Friday TOD all evening..upped, flew without contact for about 15-20 minutes and then "poof".

This is not a whine...please do not adjust your set.

Probably, better to show perk planes in yellow, or just put a perk/unperk planes switch in hangar.

Yes, for event disconnects are bad, but much worse are TCP switches lately. That "feature" is something, what ruins my AH expirience constantly. Get 262, fly 20 minutes, BANG, TCP, go home. Get plane during event, BANG, TCP, rtb and wait another week.

Gotta agree with ya Fariz, this  TCP switch concept seems to me like amputating your arm cause you got a wart on your finger.

You can already re-up in case of disco in a TOD....as long as it is within the first 30 mins.  All you have to do is notify the setup CM and have him open the field for you.

Why not just ask for all the perk planes to be moved to either the top or bottom of the list?

Uh...no, TCP is like splinting your arm because it got broken in one or more places.

UDP is a connectionless protocol.  Not entirely unlike the message in a bottle trick; you send out a packet and hope it gets there, because there's no way to be sure.

TCP is a bit like FedEx.  Every packet has a tracking number, and if one doesn't arrive your computer calls customer support and gets another one sent.

UDP is faster, TCP is more reliable.  If you have a bad connect, and too many UDP packets don't get where they're going it switches to TCP on the hope that the more reliable transport protocol will save your connect at the cost of more latency.

The alternative, of course, is to make no attempt to save your connection (and your perks) and just domp you when UDP begins to fail.

But as the wise man once said, "No good deed goes unpunnished".

Think of it as a tax on people who do not pay attention to detail.  There are some occupations (surgeon, engineer, accountant...others come to mind); PARTICULARLY accountaints, who must constantly pay attention to the details.

Come to think of it, who would want a feduciary that can't tell the difference between an IX and an XIV!?  :D

I guess I'm confused Puck, before the implementation of the UDP TCP switch I almost never was disconnected. Also if TCP is more reliable why do I experience  a drastic increase in text lag, rubber bullets and warps after the switch?

If your connect is "messy"; ie somewhere in your route packets are getting lost, then UDP will switch to TCP.  Every one of those lost packets in TCP mode will be resent.

Imagine sending a letter to someone via post office, but you can't put more than five words on a page.  You can number your pages, though, so the recipient knows what order to re-assemble the letter at the other end.

The person your sending the letter to gets 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, and 15 (end of letter).  They then have to send you a letter saying they need copies of 2, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, and 14.  You then re-send those, but they only get 2, 5, 10, 11, 13, and 14, so they write back asking for yet another copy of 7, and 8.  You get the idea.  Eventually they'll get the whole thing, but it can take some time.

That's TCP.  With UDP you had a letter in 15 parts, but they aren't numbered or ordered or anything else.  The recipeint has to figure out how to re-assemble it.  If the recipeint gets too confused they can "give up"; that's the point at which TCP takes over.

The problem isn't really TCP.  If you have a clean route it will add some overhead and latency, but not as much as you're seeing.  The problem is the route to the AH host, which seems to be having problems.  In HTCs defense the net traditionally slows down this time of year, and with all the telco bankrupsies outages are neither located or corrected as fast as they once were.

I sympathize, though.  I pinged a SpitIX (that's a Spit9, Curval :D ) from nose to tail with 20mm cannon rounds the other day and he flew off without a care...

Curval,

I'll send you my Spitfire Mk XIV engine start sound if you like.  It has a Coffman cartridge bang sound at the very start (because the Griffon used such a system).  Because of the bang I always know if I'm in a Spitfire Mk XIV as none of the Merlin Spits use the sound.

Send and email message using the UBB if you want the sound.

"Why not just ask for all the perk planes to be moved to either the top or bottom of the list? "

The hanger list is sortable. Just click on one of the colum headings; standard windows stuff.
