We have targets designed for pinpoint bombing and new "dumbed-down" Ver.1.10 bombsights designed for "area" or "carpet" bombing with random accuracy.
Making the bombsights and bomb fall more historically and physically accurate is relatively easy; making the
targets more appropriate to a strategic bombing force is a squeak. First, you've got to come up with a way to do it that isn't going to fatally compromise frame rate (or make people upgrade to 2GHz+ machines with GF4/Radeon9700 vidcards) when you fly over a factory complex.
HiTech has already said that larger towns are in the works; this entails working with each of the existing terrain maps to make sure that the town positioning will allow a larger town to fit on the flat ground -- having a town that's partially underground is bad for field capture, and having a town that's partially floating in mid-air is bad for sanity and for both the crazy pilots who try to fly under the buildings, and for the crazy vehicle drivers who try to hide under them.
Both bombing and target updates require changes to the FE code, but the target updates
also require that the people at HTC grovel over the terrain files to make sure that they work with the new target code, and fix them where they don't. It's going to be a pretty sizeable amount of work, and I expect that we're going to be downloading new terrain files for a while after the strategic target update comes out.
HTC's got an incentive to do it right, Vega, but it can't all be done at once; noodging them about it won't get it done faster. (Two weeks...
