Then the hammer fell....
« on: September 07, 2002, 06:59:02 PM »
ok I know this one is MY fault.

First today I got the GREAT news that my car would only cost $450 instead of $3500 (new engine).

30 min later the mailman shows up with a registered letter.

IRS notification of intent to levy :D

Hopefully they will take the deal I can offer them Monday and in about 10 months I'll have them off my back.  I'm in control though :)

Thank God I have an understanding father who is going to pay for the car repairs and you dudes to keep throwing this toejame at.

well, I may have some good news for you (seems you could use some lately).

working in construction I know many people with tax problems.  some of them have gone over 20 years without filing, and claiming max. dependants on their w4 forms. (we change jobs often, sometimes 15-20 w2's for one year, so you can get away with claiming way more. usually upto 'married and 9' before it raises a redflag with the IRS).

anyway most of these guys have settled in the last 3 years.  some have owed more than 200k and got out of it for about 10k.

so basicly if they are convinced that-
1. what you are offering is the most they will likely get.
2. you honsetly intend to keep your taxes straight in the future.
and
3. to push you farther would just make you give up and stop earning recordable moneys.

they seem to be in a settling kind of mood the last couple years.

I don't no anybody who has made a reasonable offer in good faith, that wasn't able to work something out.

If I can talk them out of the penalties and interest I can get out of this in about 10 months at $500/month.   I'm calling them first thing Monday.

The ironic part is that I was at their internet sight looking into an offer in compromise just last thursday. hehe

damn, thats not much to owe.  (I know it seems more when it's your debt) I owed oregon revinue 4k for 4  years and they took payments of 50-100per month until I got tired of it and paid off the last couple k this summer.

you should have no problem getting them to go for that.

btw- I would try not to let your fears of future lay-off come up during conversation with them.  you deffinatly want to project the image of solid future income if you want them to go payments.

LOL payments are their only option if they want the money.  They could take everything I own and it wouldn't equal the amount I owe them (with penalties and interest).  Or I guess they could put me in jail but then they'd get nothing.

I'm planning on telling them if I get laid off I'll do the offer in comprimise thing and they'd have almost 1/2 the money at that time, or payments if I keep my job.

I just think it's perfect the timing of all this.  Biggest lesson I've learned is take care of responsibilities FIRST before anything else.  I never even imagined that my "house of cards" could all come crashing down in this short of a time period.

I owe them so I need to pay though....

I'd been 6 months at 1 company when I set up my origanal agreement (250 per month, didn't tell them a lay-off was coming in 40 days) then I got laid-off and called them before the next payment was due.  it was very easy to get it reduced ( to a $50 minimum + whatever I could afford) once the agreement was made.  somehow it slipped my mind to inform them that I went back to work about 8 days later.  I still made regular payments of more than the minimum, but having it set so low made it alot less stressful when budgeting.

capt. apathy,
As an IRS Agent I'd like to thank you for your confession regarding tax fraud. Please report to the Portland office of the IRS first thing Monday morning with all your tax records- and your checkbook. Or, if you'd prefer, we can settle this right now out of court for fifty bucks. Send cash to PO Box 874, Orangevale, California 95662 and we'll call it even.

As an FBI Agent, I'd like you to know that impersonating an IRS agent with intent to fraud is a federal crime. A raid on your home residence is being planned as I write. Unless of course, if you'd prefer, we can settle this right now out of court for one hundred bucks. Send cash to P.O. box 178 Tallmadge Ohio, 44278, and we'll call it even.

Udie, my wife works for IRS taxpayer services.  Get in touch with them at 1-800-829-1040 between 4:30am and 10pm pacific.  As a rule, they are more than willing to accomodate anyone that seems willing to actually pay back taxes.  The sterness comes when people refuse to pay anything or simply ignore the IRS all together.

I'm sure they'll find what you are proposing quite satisfactory.
