Help - MSI KT3 Ultra 2 - USB2 problem
« on: September 08, 2002, 03:35:53 AM »
Hiyas

Need some help with the USB2 devices on the MSI KT3 Ultra2 mobo (VIA KT333 chipset).  It has 2 x USB ports on the mobo and then 2 x USB2 through a 'D-bracket' which plugs into a slot.

The problem I have is that my case has 2 x USB2 ports on the front of the case but they are not connected.  The USB connectors are not joined into one plug - each wire has it's own connector.  This means I don't know which pin to plug the connector onto!

On the motherboard there is JUSB3 pins (USB2). (D bracket USB are connected to JUSB2 pins).

Pin definitions are:

1:   USBPWR
2:   USBPWR
3:   USBP2-
4:   USBP3-
5:   USBP2+
6:   USBP3+
7:   GND
8:   GND
9:   Not Connected
10: USBOC

The wire connectors are as follows:

Data+1   -   red wire
Data-1 (minus)   -   lilac greyish wire
Data+2   -   blue wire
Data-2 (minus)   -   green wire
VCC1   -   black wire
VCC2   -   yellow wire
GND1   -   orange wire
GND2   -   purple wire
Shield   -   dark grey thick wire

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!  At least I can then use the front ports! :)

there is no way to burn  usb port, so just  plug in and check if it works , but beware take some cheap usb device to test it !!!!!! the pluget device can smoke  realy easy,  about the original bracket  for nec usb 2 they faced in miror to each other so if the first got ahed the second you have to inverse

in MSI kt 333 manual use GND wires  to identifi corect position

orange, purple

You mean that you have each wire off the case's front ports available?

If that's the case:

USBPWR (pin 1 indicated) -> VCC1
USBPWR (pin 2) -> VCC2
USBP2- -> Data -1
USBP3- -> Data -2
USBP2+ -> Data +1
USBP3+ -> Data +2
Ground -> GND 1
Ground -> GND 2
Shield -> USBOC

That should be right. :)

Excellent!  Thanks Bloom, I'll give it a go when I switch the PC off! :)  Some of the connections made sense but I wanted some expert advice... don't want to damage anything! :)

Hi Bloom

I tried what you described and it does detect a USB device but says that there must be a problem saying that it might not work properly.  Power is received but it almost seems like it's reversed?  Plugging the device into another USB port (one that was already connected) works fine.

Is there any variation as to which way you can wire it up?
